So im trying to rank for a few highly competitive keywords (3-500k exact matches) although First page results dont have any pr over 5

So I have about 60+ one way links from high PR sites so far(not niche related), my next steps

-on site optimization for my 2 main keywords
-add several posts a week to my domain.com/blog/
-start submitter few articles a week to several article directories
-get some low quality profile/comment links

i will randomize between 2-3 different keywords

Can anyone add some insight into my SEO game plan so I can be successful please!!

    much appreciate

For such kwds you are gonna need WAAAAY more links to get ranked. Submitting articles to "several" dirs will get you nowhere. Get yourself a copy of "senuke" and start blasting those articles out to web 2.0 properties.

The number of results for a keyword doesn't say sh*t about the competition. Is it more difficult to win a dragrace against two Volvo then against a single Ferrari? You need to be on page one or two and those are the only competitors that matter. Check all backlinks and its pagerank for your competitors on the first page. By doing so you will get an idea on how many backlinks you will need. I assume all the sites have decent onpage SEO.

I would consider making your onsite keyword density for the target terms, and then making 10 sub pages using long tail keywords that have your main ones in them, so you have 10 pages dedicated to different keyword phrases, but still contain density for your target phrase. If you do this you can internally build relevant pages/links to the domain/page your targeting.

How OLD is the site, Mike? Cuz that can really determine your tactics. On a new site, you'll tend to rank for Exact-Match keywords first - if & where you can compete on those. I tend to focus on the Top-5 phrases you ARE getting traffic for to push them higher up and keep the hits coming in. Fortify what IS working, then as the site ages (typically 6mo - 1yr+) then Phrase-Match keywords and long-tail variants will kick in. Then you can really start pushing the really competitive money terms.

I'm saying this especially for the newbies here: Don't get trapped thinking there's X-Y-Z you're going to rank for no matter what. Let your site stats tell you which keywords you CAN get seen for, and anchor text those phrases, start post titles with those phrases. Tweet using those phrases to get the $ rolling in NOW. *IF* you can do that - then start identifying the top money phrases you want to start going after for the long-haul. Quantity only gets you so far, Authority and Trust are where it's heading in 2010 and beyond.

Make sure you know the basics, how to submit your site to search engines, how to pick your keywords, the importance of your "about" page, backlinks, etc.
