Aside from providing quality inbound links and on page seo, how can I optimize my page for ranking better. Obviously search engines like new, fresh content but how can one do that with just a static sales page? Thanks

You can include a link to related articles at the bottom and load them with related content linking back with proper anchor text to your main page:

    Main Page <-------------
    |---------- ^----^----^
    |---------- |----|-----|
    Articles -- a1 -- a2 -- a3

In my opinion, you don't. All of my sites have a static page as the home page so I make sure that in every post that I do, I link back to my static page with an anchor link of some description. Every now and again, I update the static page but I'm talking about every few months and I have no problem ranking on google and I operate in financial services which is mega competitive.
