SEO for Google Maps only

Has anyone had success to SEO a Google Maps only listing? For the longest time, we didn't get our own customer URL for a Google Maps listing, it was hard to even share just a listing by itself. But, now in the Google My Business page, you get your own custom URL. Has anyone tried building links to this to see what happens?

My client is a Mortgage Advisor for a bank, he's not allowed to make his own web page. He's barely allowed to have a Google My Business listing, that's a grey area on its own. He's allowed a linked in and FB page at the most and he's only allowed to post company branded material, meaning other advisors are posting the exact duplicate content as well.

I''m tryin to build links to his GMB page only to test, i've received some results but they come and go.

I don't think you will have much luck as I've tried it and I've looked at my traffic and have seen nothing improve or get worse. If you have time you can try it but I don't think it will make much of a difference. People who find me on GMB have been those who are extremely close to my location. I haven't seen any increase in other areas. I wouldn't say I've even seen an increase in my own area.

Links by themselves are worthless unless they drive traffic. So far, the only variable that is worth outside the listing variables itself, is traffic, citation strong correlation between sources, and schema. No other factors seem to be worthy. This reminds me other similar channels like Youtube videos.

Thanks for the quick replies you all. Sorry, I wasn’t super clear in what I mean is has building links to a google maps link (https://g.page/your-custom-google-maps-url) increase local SERP. For my other businesses, I’ve seen an increase in business from local SERP, as well as organic SERP of course.

But like I said, I have no choice but to only do local SEO for this client, he’s not allowed to build a web page ( meaning no organic SERP)

If he's not allowed to build his own webpage why doesn't he just buy a webpage to be his own name such as http://www.johndoe.com and in there he can create a portfolio of his work, hobbies, and so on. It's a grey area but its technically not a webpage for advertising his business. Just a thought....theres always some way to work around it in a grey area.
