Has anyone had success in ranking sites in Germany or other non english speaking countries?

This is for google of course.

What are some tips and tricks for optimizing for non english countries.

Do I need to do keyword research in other languages? Or do these countries search in english ever?

Do you mean ranking english sites in germany? Or german sites in germany? (rubbish question I know)

I create lots of sites in other languages. But I sometimes see that people look for english keywords. Use an hosting located there, if possible an appropriate tld (like fr, de, nl), try to mention in your posts about some cities of that country (really useful)

i did,all you have to do is get backlinks as usual but you need local ones,if you wanna rank in Germany you need .de backlinks,if you wanna rank a site in the uk get co.uk links, good ones

I mean ranking sites in Germany hopefully in English. If I need to do german can I just use google translator?

Also being in the USA am I allowed to register a .de domain?

Is it better to use English or german when doing keyword research? My guess is that Germans must use english when searching Google at leat sometimes right?

Or do I only target German phrases?

i do seo in Spain and i search keywords in Spanish. English keywords no is used here. In others countries of europe i dont know.

I do SEO for some portuguese sites and I have been dealing with this too. First it is kind of hard to find blogs to comment on my language, so no scrapebox big spammy blasts.

What I do is scrape blogs with SB and try to comment on high pr pages only (kinda hard) and also I build links with senuke and spun articles in my own language.

Then I blast those senuke properties with SB blasts (any kind of language).

Ranked one site out of three very well with this, also the site is now PR3 (four months old site).

I wouldnt bother with english phrases/keywords if you are looking to rank in google.de (or any other eu google) also ggl translator is ok but not great so you will not 100%get accurate what you will looking for. They will serch english phrases if they are searching for english content.Maybe someone who speak german can give you some translation stuff here.As of .de domain, you should be able to register one,but i ranked .com and even a .info in various local eu googles

Use german backlinks for german website. But also english page with high PR can help you!
In your case English page that rank <2 are good only for index websites.

I got some ranked 1 dutch sites, there so easy because seo isn't famous here. But the english to dutch translator sucks so badly.
So if u want to translate to a europe language it's going to be hard to make them perfect because no content grammar is right.

Makes the sentences like chinese lol

(I'm dutch takes me 15 mins to translate from english to dutch)

So i think if u submit ur sites to some of europe country sites i don't think there going to be hard to get accepted, just make sure the grammar is correct.
Backlinks are like unknown here

Thanks for all the replys guys! Really helpful!

So should I do my keyword research in German or English?

If I select google.de in adwords and then use English keywords will this be accurate?

I will also try German as well.

Thanks again guys, any more input would be great!

If I get it right you are trying to rank a DE site in German.
So I recommend you to use only google.de with a german keyword.

If this is your situation stay away from translating stuff to english and english keywords, since you need to focus on your german keyword on your german site at first.

Hi Stoaf, I am dealing with the same issue. From my point of view, it's a completely different story to rank a domain in Google.com and in a local Google. Honestly, most of the things that work in .com when we speak about backlinking wont work for you in Google.de . The reason is simple - google.de will not index most of the sites you will incorporate into your backlinking strategy. It's not "set up" that way.

And, you can hardly focus on German Web 2.0, German Article directories, etc., as there are very little amount of these - so the power they'll provide will be quite low...

I believe that the best you can do here is the following: Try to make the domain with as many websites as you only can. That means, if you can somehow (we are on BH forum) make it with 1000s of inner sites, do it. I see from my own experiments that these domains having so many inner websites rank particularly well in local Googles.

Other thing I would advice is to make the registration in local directories (.de). I know some people here will say it sucks, but however, in local googles it's not the worst strategy.

I can write some more other basic things, but I am sure you know about those. Good luck m8 anyway!

My site is in Italian, hosted in the USA! Researched and using Italin keywords! Gettin' backlink from Italian and non-italian websites...all work good (with google.it and even yahoo Italy)!

In google.it I'm in the first page for the keyword "informatica vicenza" (keyword with 5.210.000 results).

I advice you to optimize your page with IBP with the keyword(s) of your choice (this software really help you to optimize your page), use scrapebox, and submit to web directories!

Use google webmaster tools to monitor your keywords/click/impression/backlinks!

Why you want to create german sites? I ranked a lot of german sites, cause i am german. But i'd like to go into english market, because i think conversions are much better there. For google keyword tool you have to use german words. 99% we search in german, except common terms like iphone etc.

Google translator = :D

If you want to rank in a foreign country you would be better using that countires language.

You will need anchor links in foreign text to move up in google. Seo is the same for all googles just different languages and the competition is generally harder in richer countries with better economies.

With regards to the OP's interests, is it necessary to host the website in said country to rank?

If you have a country related tld such as .co.uk for the uk or .es for spain then it don't matter. If you have one of the extensions that are not country specific then ideally you want to host in the same country. And make sure the host is fast because slow sites do not rank well in google.

you can't register a .de domain that easily, thought you had to prove that you are a german citizen.
