Sorry, you must have misunderstood me. Yeah they have no idea what a good looking website looks like.

My best of luck with them, is to find a site I like and tell them to copy. No reason to build a pure custom site unless for reasons like you stated

I don't agree with the part "Yeah they have no idea what a good looking website looks like." Just like everything, it varies from person to person and not from country to country. Also, it's relative. What might look like a great looking site to one person might look like shit to another person.

what about a wordpress ecommerce site? would this not be best for SEO anyway? I have often wondered why the big guys of SEO dont have 30 - 50 ecommerce sites in high commercial keywords raking in loads of dough. Maybe someone can point me out the reason.

7) Get in control of your onsite linking. Don't waste linkjuice, by linking to irrelevant pages like "about us", "return policy" etc. But remember to use java-links for those footer links and don't make the mistake and use the no-f0llow tag. Never use that for onsite links!

Can someone explain this statement to me? Why are no-follow links bad to your about us pages?

He didn't say "no follow links to your about us page are bad" He said "backlinks to your about us page are a waste" and "do not use no follow in your on site links"

I'm from India, and yes, I HAVE done conversion testing

Conversion testing is only done by people who've been in the business for a while. Not every web designer whose not-from-india hasn't done conversion testing either.

I believe the basic idea behind the no-follow link is "I don't trust the contents of this website", or something along that lines. So I believe that if you link something on your own site as no-follow, it appears bad in googles eyes. Maybe it's seen as PR or linkjuice hoarding. Maybe it's seen as "I don't trust the contents of my own website". Can't be sure, but just don't use them.

Yes, eastern and western designs are totally different. But that hardly applies to web designing, there's no culture here, It all comes down to experience here in the end. I've seen stuff come from India that looks super professional, and I've seen stuff from a few acquaintances in western world that looks like shit, even on this forum.

I respect you and know that you must have a reason for your opinion, and I'm very curious to know what it is.

Well come on. We can also say that about anything in life.

There will always be a few exceptions to everything. That is why we generalize, because it gives us a way to process things.

So, yes. Most of people from India have no design skills. The word "most" means a lot and not all. But, I would have to say that most sumss up mine and many other people.

Just like most basketball players here in the US are black. Again"most".

What kind of SEO do you guys recommend for a small E-Commerce site? A landing style page with 4-5 options to buy a product, then on the top several tabs with the disclaimer, FAQ etc.

Keep the Disclaimer, Privacy policy, TOS etc. in the footer.
And yeah for 4-5 products, you could simple have a page which lists all the products, and then one page each for the products.

Has anyone thought about sticking a small seo-optimized paragraph for your keyword in the footer?

The category headings on your main page should be keyword optimized as well, for example, for pedometers, "Top Rated Pedometers", "Featured Pedometers" etc. That's just a rough example off the top of my head.

I'd also use the meta keywords tag. People say it's obsolete, but it's got to have SOME effect.

Gotta run to uni. But I'm going to be working on an e-commerce website for a client from day after, I'll read the thread and post here if I do something that hasn't been mentioned yet.

I honestly don't see any different except your gna need more backlinks. Product pages are harder to rank then an article page.

Backlinks, backlinks, backlinks. Rank some articles and send traffic over to product pages. Entice people to click on over. Rank articles and category pages
