Hi. I am new here and I am trying to invest in the future of my business.
I have a cleaning business which is small right now but brings nice income.
So my question is how competitive is SEO for that niche and how much I should be expecting to spend on SEO.

What city are you in? You focus on homes or offices or both?

The question is really too broad for us to answer. Anyone who tries to sell you something for X amount per month without reviewing your site and understanding your competition, is probably just after your money and doesn't care about long term safe success. If you live in Los Angeles, California, that is going to be much more difficult to target than if you live in Farah, Afghanistan. You can probably get results spending just $50 USD per month, if the person knows what they are doing. They should be able to give you a precise plan of what they will do for you, and you can always come back to this thread and ask if that's a good deal. Of course, you can probably get better results if you spend $100, and maybe even better results if you spend $200. Etc.

Most small businesses who are paying for SEO services are spending between $300 and $700 USD per month I would imagine. But the guy who pays $300 might be getting better results than the guy who pays $700, and the guy who pays $700 might be getting better results than someone paying $2000. The SEO services industry is very wild and most service providers do not like to be transparent with their fees. Their fee is usually based on the maximum they think they can get from you.

In General, local SEO isn't that difficult to get some nice results from. There are lots of things that local SEO service providers can do that your competition is not doing and it will give you a big boost in exposure online not just in the search engine results, but could be things like local service directories and such.

I did a quick search of our SEO Packages Marketplace for Local SEO service providers. I am not affiliated with them in any way, these are just the top 2 I could see from my search. These guys are advertising for Local SEO only, I think that's important for a business in your position, competitive market, looking to move into more competitive markets. You have some protection if you feel ripped off, as these guys have successful businesses on blackhatworld and a strong enough reputation they don't want to damage.

I would have a look through their threads, and if you feel interested, make a reply asking them to private message you (your account is too new to private message I guess). Then I would provide them a link to your website and ask how confident they feel about improving your online ranking/presence, what their fees are, what their plan to help you grow, what reports they will provide you and when.

You probably wont find better prices outside of blackhatworld, and you usually have a lot more safety dealing with members here because their business and reputation are worth a lot of money.

Even if you don't hire someone here, the experience of speaking with these guys and reviewing their threads should help you better understand what to look for when hiring someone.

Get a quote from agency itself. :)

The thing is I get a lot of quotes, calls and people who claim my business will be on top in 2 months or weeks.
If it would be 6 years ago I would pay the first guy who called and told me the fairy tale. But today I research 20 times before I make the purchase. I try to get as much as possible for the money.
I am trying to learn as I go but the thing is that I am too busy during the day and too tired at night.
Why I am here? Just trying to learn, I hired someone to redesign the website (hope it will be good).
I would like to thank Social Manager for the reply as I think I will try one of them.

Hire an agency to help you with this. You will want to make sure that your Google listing is correct also in order to get the most out of it.

You've chosen probably the top 5 most difficult SEO wise cities in regards to cleaning to start in. Good luck.

The one thing I would say is watch out for providers that promise you the stars and the moon... take your time, speak with different providers and go with the one that makes you feel more comfortable with
