I used xenforo, and it was a wrestling forum. I would say for the SEO of the forum; there is an area like in WordPress to put in your keywords and also put in your sitemap if I remember correctly. I also would get topics that people would like to talk about but getting the people there and to comment is the hardest part. I used Reddit in the past by commenting, " I like this forum XYZ as it is small and friendly," which seems to work. Here is a link to help you out

Engagement of people on forums is down due to FB, Twitter, Insta, and other social media platforms. The only ones standing are the product support forums, but even then, I don't see many of them.
Yes, getting new users is hard but can be achieved with good seo.

I am not trying to discourage you, just saying it didn't work for me. You can do Seo for your forum; also, make sure your posts have keywords in them and have a lot of interaction as it pushes it into google, I have found. If you ever need help, I have free time just pm me.

just like for any other type of website,
you might want to add some decent threads with long-form content at 1st,
these will do help with SEO, targeting keywords, adding some value to the website & attracting people,
when it comes to links, just start by getting some quality ones to the homepage,
and unless u don't have some threads with targetted keywords, you can keep all of the links pointing to the homepage

Mostly People use internet for 3 basic requirements
1. To make money / business building
2. Entertainment
3. For any information / support
Most part of this audience is in entertainment section. But for this purpose, now people dont signup to forums, they have other better platform for fun and relationship building.
SO i think forum will not work anymore, if you want to earn from it.
Still if this is your passion to create one. then you have to be very active, run forum like blog, write detailed info related to your niche, and try to gain organic traffic.
You can also create some copetition or reward your users to stay online on your forum and do activity there.
in 2009-10 time, many new forum createer reward there users for posting on forum, it was like 5-10 cent for new thread, and 2-3 cent per reply.
You can try something like this.

You do not start a subdomain. If you applied for a SEO specialist role at Taktical in New York, you would have got that question wrong on the quiz.

4. Connecting to people
I would use the ahref backlink checker (google it) or any other backlink checkers (paid versions of moz, ahrefs, etc), then search the backlink profile of other forums and try to replicate backlinks from the sources (websites) where those forums got their backlinks. then assuming by doing so you rank higher, your forum is in a good niche, you'll get users, if we are talking about acquiring by organic traffic.

Here's what I would do.
If I was starting out a forum, I would look for competitor forums that are in the same niche and run their domains on an SEO tool.
I'm looking for keywords that are easy to rank but pull decent traffic.
Once I have those keywords, I will then craft questions based on them and post them on my forum.
Of course, I would have to hire virtual assistants to post answers to those questions.
Similarly, I would use the same technique but on Quora.
I would look for questions related to my niche on Quora and then post those questions along with matching answers to my forum.
At the end of the day, forums can be a headache. For them to rank, you have to have a lot of activity because you don't know which question will show up on Google.
So, it's really a numbers game.
