I have started a college directory site in my country. How should I do seo for this site to stand out from other top rankings similar sites in this niche ? There are some sites which even got VC funding so can I even beat them alone in rankings ?

Target Long-Tail Keywords: Focus on long-tail keywords that are less competitive but still relevant to your niche. For example, instead of targeting broad terms like "college directory," aim for specific keywords like "best engineering colleges in [your country]" or "cheapest medical schools in [your country]."
Create High-Quality Content: Develop comprehensive and valuable content that addresses the needs and questions of your target audience. This could include guides on college admissions, rankings, reviews, and tips for choosing the right college.

Try to build a community, create spaces where students and educators can interact, ask questions, and share experiences. This not only drives engagement but also adds fresh content to your site.

To make your college directory site stand out in search rankings, focus on creating unique and valuable content. Start by researching keywords related to your niche and using them naturally throughout your site. Ensure your site is user-friendly and loads quickly. Build backlinks from reputable sites to boost your authority. Regularly update your content and engage with your audience through social media. While competing with well-funded sites can be tough, high-quality content and strong SEO practices can help you improve your rankings over time.

If you do not already have user generated content on the site, you may want to look at ways to include a section where users can engage more actively, for example adding colleges/courses to their favorites list, colleges where they have applied, admitted, etc.
Existing students can leave their ratings and feedback about the colleges, campus life, etc.
You can then use this data to display interesting stats and graphs.
The idea is to keep adding innovative features to level up and differentiate your site from your competitors.

Here are few steps that i used last year for one of my clients, I hope it will help you too.

1. Keep your On-Page and Technical SEO Spot On
2. Reach out to colleges to get listed in their directories and resources pages
3. Guest post on popular higher ed blogs and news sites
4. Participate in relevant online communities and forums
5. Promote your content on social media heavily and if you have budget run on and off.

Research and target long-tail keywords that prospective students might use when looking for specialized programs or unique aspects of colleges.
