I was contacted today via an old contact on MSN offering help for my site (my msn username is the site address)

Here is the conversation:

J.B says:
I can do free seo on your site if you want
www.yourfreebeez.co.uk says:
free? may i ask whats in it for you?
J.B says:
well it's 1 day seo, I dont get much work at this time of year and when I do it well and you start getting loads of visitors you'll probably pay for seo
www.yourfreebeez.co.uk says:
thats a very good idea
www.yourfreebeez.co.uk says:
as they say, sometimes free gifts give you so much more work
J.B says:
exactly
www.yourfreebeez.co.uk says:
i might be able to help you also
www.yourfreebeez.co.uk says:
what would you need from me?
J.B says:
well ftp access would be easiest
www.yourfreebeez.co.uk says:
may I ask why you would need that? im sure you can understand my unwillingness to just give out my ftp details, nothing personal lol
J.B says:
lol yeah I know what you mean, I'll need it to gather data, change back end stuff to make it seo friendly etc and make the urls seo friendly
www.yourfreebeez.co.uk says:
brb
J.B says:
ok

Is this normal for ths situation? What I mean is, do they normally use FTP details etc?

yes they would but id be cautious, if someone is actually decent they dont need to go around givin out freebies to get new clients and the best thing for most sites is links not onsite seo... though it all depends how crap your site is (realize that i havnt looked)

ok, after looking, you need content, lots of it, links, lots of them, stumbles, lots of them, then you might get somewhere decent with this...

It seems to me that any decent SEO will look at your site as a search engine bot does -- externally.

Then they will document recommendations for you to approve or reject. They won't go making changes to your site on their own.

I would not grant FTP access to this person.

If you trust that guy and know him verywell than its ok to give him ftp details or else u can give him zip file of your website and tell him to change, after changes is done you can upload files through ftp.

SEO stuff would have to begin with what a site owner wants his site to rank for. So I'd be wary of someone saying they need ftp access too change contents of my site to make it SEO friendly. Has he specified what phrases is he going to optimize your site for.

I'd be wary of giving ftp access to anyone I'm remotely uncomfortable with!

On a side note, I just realized that this kinda forum posting is a damn cool way of getting legit backlinks :D (absolutely nothing implied here!)

A good seo expert will not need your ftp info in the beginning since he would look at it from s.e. site. If he likes to checkout or edit some pages you could download them yourself and give them to him.

Right, just woke up so sorry for the delay in replying.

I appreciate all your help and think im gonna just zip the 5 main index files and send him them.

I have sensitive information in one of my subdomains including db access etc so I feel that, even if I did know him better, then I still wouldnt allow access.

He is trying to make some money with CPA (web hosting affliate).

aaaaaaaaand you found the hook, tell him to get lost, go download seobook and read up on how to do it properly yourself

I sent him the index.html and he added a few things into the head tags

Turnaround was about 20 minutes lol

He meant post what it looked like before and then after to see what the guy improved lol.

It could be a trap. Recently I heard a lot of SCAM and Con case using MSN and Yahoo messenger. The hacker login using your friend's msn and create a story to ask money from you. Example: I need $500 urgently, will pay you back tomorrow when we meet. But when you contact your friend, your friend will tell you it's not him and he didn't ask money from you. Beware!

SEO really is not that hard to do yourself. You've found BHW and gotten this far. Just be careful before paying a boatload to someone who may no less then you about SEO. It's all about marketing :(
