Assuming you want to advise someone who just bought a new domain and just finished building his website and want to rank 1st on Google for competitive keywords.

What are your advise for such person? What are the MUST DO and how to go about it?

if the site was built wrongly the rest won't even matter.

So, I would advise them to research the niche and keywords properly first, and then plan out and structure the site around those keywords.

From what you said it sounds like you just built a site randomly without any research or intel and now you want to rank #1 for whichever topic you want, which is never going to happen without research and planning the site out, sorry to say it but it's how it is

Tell them don't be so greedy and expect to be first all the time. You can't just want to be first at the top of google and make that happen, since we don't own google, and have no say in the algo. It's thankfully down to quality offering and marketing, over months and years.

What is the website? Please don't say a wordpress blog with 20 articles of something. lol

I would have said to them to start educating themselves on the matter asap.

Treat this first website like an experiment and test what you learn there.

SEO used to be part of the "get rich quick" schemes back in the day.
You could have just slapped a crappy website together and start generating clicks and revenue shortly after.

It's not the case anymore.
If you don't come in prepared, you're gonna fail.
