A hyphen is not a problem. Had some websites ranking good with it.
Https is a must. Won't make you jump on the 1st place but your ranking can be worst without it.

Hyphen has no effect on ranking whatsoever. People just don't like it, because it doesn't look too good, that's all.
Https helps a little bit, but it's not worth the trouble, especially if you already have an established website or website with some backlinks already in place. The fact that Wirecutter doesn't have https, should be sufficient enough.
Neither of this should be your primary focus really.

Yes. https is good for any site and it is very safe for all types of browsers. Also hyphen is not bad and also not good, it is some thing that work really if you need it!

In our program, we have quite a lot of affiliates who use hypehns in their websites - this does not stop them from ranking in the tops. Also there is no evidence that it affects the positions whatsoever.
When it comes the https, nowadays it helps and it is a very important factor. Probably soon it is going to be mandatory by google.

"Very important factor"? And you are basing this on what?
Sure Google briefly mentioned in 2014 that they had included it as a ranking factor (one of hundreds) - this does not make it a "very important factor".
"Probably soon it is going to be mandatory by google" - what does that even mean? No of course it isn't gonna be mandatory by Google.
SSL is slower than non-SSL (during the initial handshake) so certain websites might not wanna include it for technical reasons.
To OP:
Yes, SSL is a ranking factor so utilizing it on your site will be an advantage.
However the advantage is probably going to be very slight so you might have other SEO work that yields a higher return for your time.

Using https is always good as it is a ranking signal and I wouldn’t say that using the hyphen in the domain name is bad but there may be a chance if the instincts behind that are bad.
