I want to SEO a site. Domain is under 1 year old. The keyword I want to optimize has 200k competitors.

How long would it take to make google page 1 for that keyword? And how many hours would it take.

Apologies for noobish question.

BillyRay

How long till number one position ? Thats impossible to answer .... the programmed google bot will address that issue. Best advise is to follow what the top sites for that term are doing or have done

In regards to hours....the more you put into it, the faster it will be

Hi BillyRay,

I just typed your question into my GoogleBot Hourly SEO Calculator, and according to my calculations it will take 2041.7594 hours to get to page 1.

Please allow for calculation errors of up to 0.25%. Sorry I couldn't give you a more definitive answer, I still have the 2007 version of the GoogleBot Hourly SEO Calculator - I'm hoping to save up enough money to purchase the new version this week.

by the way, .7594 of an hour is about 45 minutes and 33 seconds...in case it wasn't obvious

What does that mean? I have to be in the rankings for 2000+ hrs before i get no. one, or I have to do 2000hrs of work?

Do you have 200k competitors in a broad or exact search? If it's exact then I wouldn't waste my time

How long is a piece of string?

The total number of competitors has nothing to do with getting into the top 10 rankings. The number and quality of inbound links, and link anchor text, domain name, and domain age of each of the competitors in positions 1-10 will determine how hard it is to get into the top 10.

How many hours doing what?

If you spent 100 hours writing articles and could produce 500 word articles at a rate of 2 per hour that would be one thing. If you could only product them at a rate of 1 per 4 hours, that would be another. If you spent all your hours reading BHW and not doing any actual promotion, you would achieve zero. It's all relative.

After you've tried getting 20, 50 or 100 sites in the top 10 versus various competition, you'll start to get a feel for just how much effort is required. Until then, it's all voodoo.

It might take a while if all you're trying to do is rank for that main keyword. Find some less competitive secondary keywords and promote these as well through article writing, link building and throw in some link wheels using web2 properties.

If its a keyword you really want, then just put your nose to the grind stone and start pumping out unique content. If you produce unique content and promote a little bit, you will get up there, but it will take time. How long, who knows. If you are going up against a weak top ten it could be a week. If they are all .gov or .edu sites at the top, then you are screwed.

Farking I have the 2009 version but it seems your calculation is spot on!:D Billy Ray no-one can tell you how long it will take. Take a look at the top 5 you want to beat then enter each into backlinkwatch or similar. As well as your own backlinks try and get one from each of the backlinks your competitors has. Bear in mind if your competitors have a high pr or are a lot older it will take longer to overtake them.

Oh and I have a 2009 platinum copy for the 1st 100 people to mail me LOL:D
