Depends on your site. If you have an established site with lots of good content and links, you can definitely go for harder keywords. There is no point in going for low volume keywords for the rest of your life
I try some difficult ones and a few work. I also found that the 'difficulty' and 'search volume' figures aren't always accurate. eg I have a keyword that has a volume of 300 per month (10 per day), but I usually get 40 per day.

If you keep ranking on these keywords the life gets so much easier you can rank like a charm on other low competition keywords without thinking about you will rank or not. It took efforts on these keywords but are worth it.

If the sites is new, then low competition keywords can be targeted. If the site is well developed one, then high competitive keywords can be used.

Actually, it would depend on your site. If you are already targeting med competition keywords and are getting ranked for them.
Then going for med-high competition keywords wouldn't be bad.
But you will need supporting content to target your main keyword.

No issues with targeting the difficult keywords, but it will take more time and effort.
So, add more secondary and LSIs relevant to the main keyword. It can help you push up the rankings.

Picking a low-difficulty keyword with a high search volume is the smart move.

I've seen huge differences between different tools for the exact same keywords, so don't take these numbers as gospel

Choose the low-competition keyword with a high search volume, It's a better option,
Or If you need that high-competition keyword and have the confidence to take that keyword and archive a good rank with that, It's really appreciated.

I don't generally consider the Keyword difficulty unless it is above 60 or 70. I try to write articles on keywords with less difficulty than that.
However, we still can't be sure if we can rank even for low competitive keywords according to these tools.

The difficult keywords usually take a lot of time to rank. Try keywords with low competition.
