Could anyone give me some tips?

what do companies/clients expect?
what do they usually ask?
any experiences to share?
...

any information is absolutely welcome.

I'm just trying to get a good picture of what this job actually requires.

thank you in advance!

Ummm let me think. Nope can't think of a single thing to say that hasn't already been said. The pages on this forum cover every aspect of SEO, much better than I can.

Really, come on Dig!

HTH, IMHO.

*clap clap* thanks for your contribution to this thread

I'm not talking about people who come here for amateur seo consultants. I'm talking about companies. How do they usually work with a consultant, what do they often demand, deadlines, investments,...

I run a small seo company. Well clients always expect improvement in sales. Rather than promising them about sales we promise them improvement in traffic and serp's .
They usually ask impossible like get xx amount of visitors, or xx amount of sales. In-fact many times we buy junk traffic to fulfill their requirement of xyz amount of traffic. They don't understand that it's not overnight process. It takes time.
Usually we ask a set of keywords. In range of around 20-40 then we provide them some 200+ keywords with detailed report about how many times these keywords are searched , ppc rates and then quote them promising to achieve serp for at-least 100 of them and getting a decent amount of traffic.
Everybody here knows, it's not traffic which converts but it's sales page, power of product and necessity of product which makes it sale. We suggest them modifications needed in sales page or website.
Hope this may give you a rough idea.

The Earth, for nothing! :D One of the best skills to cultivate is managing client expectations...

Not wishing to judge, but this seems a bit unethical. I would prefer to educate the client on the value of targeted traffic. And if they fail to understand, then walk away...

Go for quality clients and don't be concerned about losing those with unrealistic expectations, or who are too cheap to pay for your time - those type of clients will cost you in many ways...

Many clients are paying hefty sum and even if it's unethical then also losing them for ethics doesn't come in my diary. They will leave my company, hire another one. Other person will provide them the same may be at higher price then what I'm.

Depends on if your running the joint solo or employing staff / outsourcing work.

Customers always want more more more but it's all about having an efficient optimisation process in place and always balancing the profit earned from a client with the time spent working on the clients website.

Totally depends on how your going about things, generally though, they'll expect a increase in amount of leads generated though the website, they couldn't give a toss otherwise, some companies will be happy if they get #1 spots on Google for keywords, but the best bet is to explain to the company everything you know about SEO campigns, if you can get them to understand it's a slow process, keywords are king and tweaking is the best way to improve the converastion rate, then you can make a heafty sum from one company.

Most of my customers come from referrals so the questions kind of drop down with that.

But I always get asked or told I can do this myself. I answer back then why haven't you?

Can I get to page one. Depends on your keyterms you choose. I take them online and give them a crash course.

I saw and add on CL that said they only charge 250 for seo. Thats fine take the guy up on his offer. I will move your price up next time to fix the crap that they did.

I had one customer go and try this came back cause the other guy messed up the script for their site and could not figure out how to fix it.

these are just a few of what i get.

Aye, had a customer leave us around 4 months ago to move to a cheaper company. They came back last month :wiggle:

We always deal with known clients or clients refer by somebody. We discuss the whole budget for 6 months then ask them to pay 30% advance. After 2 months we provide them detailed reports and ask for next 30%.
after 4 months or so as results start to show up, we take remaining 40%. At end of contract we make them realize that link-building or SEO is process which when stopped can let them down again. As 90% clients are satisfied and start to make some kind of sale they come back. We then charge 10% extra at renewal of contract.
We never let them know how we do it or even give them a hint about SEO.

I forgot to add remaining 10% will be mostly scammers who will claim that we misused their funds and they didn't got any benefits from their investment. Never fall in any kind of argument and always try to overlook any idiots. More you try to explain more you fall in trap of providing them one/two month free services.
