So I thought I would start this thread to talk about something I run into fairly often, and see what you guys have to say about it.

Inner Pages Vs Main URL Page Backlinks

So, lets say for example. You are trying to get ranked for X keyword

#1 position for X keyword is

competition.com/yourkeyword

Well, will that page be harder to beat if say.

Backlinks Count: competition.com - 30,000
Backlinks Count competition.com/yourkeyword - 100

I guess what I am asking is, do the backlinks to the main page of competition.com matter for you trying to outrank competition.com/yourkeyword

Would the big G automatically give them more authority?

yes.. it makes the entire site more reputable, and lets it rank easier for shit.

Yes, there's an old saying in SEO that "A Rising Tide Floats All Ships" which basically means links pointing any page on a domain will help raise the other pages on a domain.

Look at Digg, new pages jump to the front of the SERP's with no links to them just because of the domain authority.

Deep links are "very" powerful, many people overlook them in favor of hammering the homepage with the same old anchor text.

For faster results...link more to your inner keyword targeted page.

For more of a long term strategy..heres what I do.
I use High PR links on the homepage to try and create authority. (High PR has a loose definition..I don't mean simply getting PR 4..PR5...I mean using your best links for the homepage..these can be in-content links on other authority sites)
I then use deep linking by using article directories and web 2.0 linking..Autoblogging. This makes it look more natural as someone on a blog..a web 2.0 property is more likely to quote a blog post/inner page rather than the homepage.
