Its hard to judge without looking at it properly but I would say that 2 months is not very long to work on a site especially if you are starting from scratch. Bear in mind that if you are doing it properly you have to make onsite changes, write articles, build tier 1 links. Then you have to wait a while before running live link reports before you can start building tier 2 and 3 links. Then you have to run live link reports again before getting everything indexed.

Watching rankings in the early stages is always dangerous. Typically I find that rankings jump right up, disappear completely and then come back (although lower than before) and then slowly start to stabilise and increase gradually with work. Obviously with penguin 2 at the end of May, rankings were jumping about even more. If you sit there watching the rankings too early, you start doubting yourself and chasing your own tail.

I would guess that your rankings will come back but I would also say that you will probably need to do more work on it unless they are easy keywords.

Just remember on Simple when you enter the SEO world: "SEO is for long term results, and any firm that guarantees great results in Long Term is Great! Don't panic temporarily, give it time. Also, SEO is an ongoing work and never stops..."

Agreee.... artificial backlink is considered as black hat, if done professionally it can be considered as grey hat...

You right, SEO is continuous work, at least (for myself) I require 3 months or more to get ranking in SERP.

So, for OP don't be panic, give your firm a time, and don't forget to ask them what they're actually done, and ask them a SEO report.

Update:
Ok, so after a few days of steady checking, most of the links seem ok.
The only thing remaining is the "google dance" on my main keywords. Although it might be the update kicking.

If this "SEO firm" just started a backlinking campaign and your business is a local business they very likely did damage your site. Local is different, and all these people telling you to build backlinks do not know what they are talking about.

SEO is not backlinks. Local is sure as hell not backlinks.

So how about those b2b sites, business directory, and ther locate citations the seo company built? Can we do the same like normal IM sites and build tier2 backlinks on them?

I do not know if it helps you to do this. Since Google is now devaluing tiered links, I doubt it will.

Personally I would spend tht time and effort into getting more citations and related high authority backlinks.

It's probably they could do something wrong such as not taking in account previous anchors or just terrible bad interlinking schemes.

No one can exactly tell you without looking at the URL.

I think your firm is not doing much wrong. You just need to be patient since you switch to white hat. Basically, there are two types of SEO: the basic and the managed SEO. What you paid for to that firm is the managed SEO. And to be honest, you are suppose to keep paying for them to continue to manage your SEO. It will not show results for at least 6 months, so you must be patient. This is not blackhat, you just need to tell yourself that.

Curious as to what local is. I didn't know local was so different. Can you elaborate?

If you have a local business, listed in maps, etc, and suddenly you get a bazillion links from across the globe, the links can harm you more than help. It's not natural for a local biz to have worldwide links.

On the other hand if you have a .com website that is not tied to any physical location, it's ok to get links from around the world.

Example: Why would a local pizza place in Nashville suddenly get links from Nigeria, India, France, etc....it MAY be legit but it'll likely trigger a review.

No exactly, building links is not blackhat.

Blackhat SEO is, tricking search engine with your spammy tricks by building spam link/site/hacked site links etc.

Update:
i don't know if someone might be interested at all in this topic but,
After 2 months, the rankings seem stable .. stable as in results show on the fifth page. (most of the keywords)

Weird part is that sometimes, mostly in the morning i am in top 3 on the first page of google, differrent ip's, google accounts, private browsing, ...
