Depends A LOT on the topic. It can range from hundreds, to millions. As a rule of thumb, consider a budget of $3K/mo to start with. Nowadays, I'm not taking anything under this budget, it's a waste of time. But paying this doesn't warrant a good job anyway. I would say that 1/3 of the budget should go for actual manual SEO management, and 2/3 to linkbuilding. Some people get those $3K and use them all for management, which is also a waste.

For a new blog, you don’t need a huge SEO budget. You can start with very little, even $0–$50 per month, by focusing on good content and basic SEO, When the blog grows and starts getting traffic, you can invest more step by step.

If you're just starting out with a blog, my advice is to invest on quality SEO rather than quantity. Budgeting for inexpensive keyword research, a trustworthy SEO tool, and infrequent content optimization is all that's needed to get things rolling. Begin with a modest investment, monitor your progress, then increase it as your blog expands.

Depends on your niche. I usually take your CPA (cost per action) - so let's say your product/service costs $1,000. Or if it's blog calculate by potential monthly monitization goal. Then multiply *3 - that should be your starting budget. So in $1,000 example - $3,000 would be considered a good starting point, although it highly depends on your category and niche

Once you're past that threshold, flip it to about 40% content, 40% link acquisition, and 20% on technical/CRO improvements. The one thing most people underbudget is content refreshing — I allocate about 15% of total spend just to updating existing pages that are decaying in rankings. A refreshed article with updated stats and expanded sections often outperforms a brand new piece since it already has accumulated link equity and click data history.

For content-driven businesses, you can estimate based on projected monthly revenue goals and apply a similar multiple. Adjustments should be made according to industry dynamics and competitive intensity.
I wouldn't start a blog in 2026 if I were you, if you plan to make money from it.
For example, I know ways to quickly create hundreds of decent-quality articles with images in a day using N8N automation. And these will be really good articles on simple, everyday topics (not complex technical issues). Writing one article will cost me about $1 (depending on the article's length and the number of images).
Moreover, everything will be based on carefully selected competitors' semantics, and the article structure will also be automatically generated based on articles from Google's top 10 search results.
