Obviously, white hat SEO is batter than black hat SEO for good business. You can go with White Hat SEO.

The only way to be 100% white hat with google, is to never SEOptimize.
Google does not like it when someone's messing with its algorithm, everything is considered to be "black hat" for it even white seo techniques.
White Hat Seo is considered to be a more "natural" looking black hat technique nowadays.

When you do seo while wearing white hat its called white hat seo and when you wear black hat its called black hat.

In that case, you have to do the grey hat method. This is the mixture form of the white hat and black hat. You can rank well in quick period of time but can not give gurantee how long you can withstand on top position by doing these techniques.

White hat SEO does not exist. As soon as you screw with Google algorithms, build a single link, it's already against their ToS and that means black hat.

One way to think of it is that black hat techniques may not work in the future - aka there's an algorithm change that makes the method no longer affective. Whilst white hat are techniques that Google has publicly said they endorse and recommend for webmaster to implement - so there's not really a situation where you could be penalized in the future by those techniques.

You just reminded me of when I got attacked by negative SEO, trust me anything can happen in the SEO world, don't trust what google says.
Many people lost thousands per month due to some weird updates, and their sites were of higher quality compared to the new competitors that dominated the serps after those above mentioned updates.
