Absolutely - I used this strategy to get the SEO company I worked for towards the top for a NUMBER of SEO related keywords a few years ago.
Some affiliate programs allow for 301 redirects from the affiliate links, thus allowing you to harness the actual PageRank of those backlinks.
Add in a custom made script that auto rotates the keywords we were trying to target, and an easy formula for solid PR and rankings from an affiliate program.

Yes, affiliate programs always help to improve your site rank because it's generated traffic. For more traffic content always useful so you should be added some these type of keyword that's very helpful for increasing rank such like "fantastic offers", "great offers", "best". Some other way to increasing your ranking, Do Link Exchanges with other sites that are on the same subject as yours, Pay for direct advertising on sites that are on the same subject as yours, Take part in banner exchanges, Purchase banner advertising, Advertise in offline media, Advertise in offline and online classifieds.
Note:- Don't include too many noticeable ads on your site as this can actually decrease the value of your site when it comes to keeping your visitors.

You have to be careful how you implement your affiliate software.
Personally, I would recommend you to make 2 websites.
One with Affiliate software installed, and NO-FOLLOW for search engines and zero search engine visibility. But MAKE IT VIRAL and advertise for it in right places.
2nd website, your product website direct to consumer.
This way, the consumer will never feel cheated or feel that somebody took a commission or they missed an oppurtunity. This will get your business better standing in the market in general and also boost your rankings to the main product page.
The affiliate site can in-turn focus on motivating the affiliates and creating exciting campaigns and coupon system for high performing affiliates.
