Hi everyone,

I’m looking for some honest feedback.

I’m thinking about starting an SEO agency in my local area here in the UK. From my research, a few local businesses seem open to paying a monthly fee for SEO services, which could give me a starting point.

That said, I know the industry has become very competitive, and I’m wondering—do you think SEO is still a viable way to make money in 2025? Or would it be smarter to put my energy into something
else?

Yes this is still a profitable one if you the owner understand and expert on it.

Thank you for taking the time to respond

Do you have any tips for getting started. I'm decent at web design and can probably get a few clients signed up straight away (Friends/Family ect)

But beyond that I'm not sure. I've ran businesses before and used Google ads but the suggested CPC for the keyword SEO United Kingdom is £20!!

Get hired as an SEO expert, being an inhouse employee is less stressful.
Thanks for the suggestion but I've always worked for someone else. I want to take a "Leap of faith" and become my own boss

yes in my opinion its but keep this service online for less stressful work
Thanks for your reply! Just to clarify, did you mean it might be better to focus on offering SEO services online more broadly, rather than only targeting local in-person clients?

I'm willing to put in the hours.

Prior to this I was running a SMM Reseller site but struggled to turn a profit.

I'm hoping SEO will be a bit more profitable

I do SEO as a part of my offering. I would say it's become harder to sell and to maintain your clients as it's not that easy to measure the results aside from increased traffic. You can easily be let go when they start to get good results and your clients don't understand the mechanisms behind the results.

In my opinion it's much easier to sell analytics, like configuring Google Tag Manager for proper event tracking to get a clear picture on what users are doing on the site. This way, you can provide easily measurable data to your clients and demonstrate what does and what doesn't work on their site. Then add SEO to the mix as an upsell for the long game.

Hi! Great question and exciting idea. SEO is definitely still viable in 2025, especially if you focus on local businesses that often don’t get enough attention from bigger agencies. The key is to specialize, offer real value, and build strong relationships. It’s competitive, but there’s always demand for quality SEO that drives results. That said, diversifying your skills or services can’t hurt—maybe consider combining SEO with things like content marketing or local ads. Overall, if you’re passionate and ready to put in the work, it’s still a solid path!

People think that you're your own boss, but you aren't, you'll just have 10 bosses instead of one.

Working for a high paying job 9-5 is amazing, when you're sick you're sick, when you're on holidays you're on holidays, when the business fucks up it's not your fault.

The only thing is, it has to be a high paying job.

hey bro how can i help you

Yes, an SEO agency is still a viable and profitable business,
but success depends on providing tangible results, like increased
sales and leads, rather than just vanity metrics. With businesses
continuing to rely on search engines for customers, effective SEO
offers a valuable long-term investment that builds organic visibility

It depends on your customer base. If they are happy with fancy ahrefs and GSC reports - go for it.

Keep in mind though that there will be point were customers question the benefit of rankings vs. actual traffic. Even a #1 SERP does not guarantee traffic anymore.

It can become very stressful dealing with owners who aren't seeing results, even when putting in the work and showing it.
If there aren't actual results like immediate leads, most of them won't hold long enough, and you would have to chase to get customers.
Even getting the website high in SERP won't be enough for them if the leads won't follow along.

Do you have skills to cater to such clients ? Or just theoretical knowledge from online search . If you do not give them results, agency will not get work in future.

If you're good at web design, do web design. Do a great job, and then refer/upsell the client for SEO. Refer to an agency (i'm biased but could recommend another great UK one ) and get a referral fee.

Much less hastle, you don't need to worry about learning another skill and complicating what should already be making you good $ (web design)

It's still very viable in the UK if you focus on a specific niche. Have you considered offering GMB optimization as your entry-level service to get your foot in the door?

It works but you will have to read continuously and keep up consistently updated with Google's updates, algorithm and tanturms.
