I've got this ecommerce site which has been doing pretty decent, growing every month. Currently it makes around $500 a month but I'm sure It'll reach $1k a month by the end of the year. I was thinking, I've got this really cheap supplier doing $3 for the product and I sell for $17.85 on my store (non incl. shipping), should I make a move in local shops which are in the niche and start selling to them? I know 17.85 is wayy to much to charge them for the product so I'd most probably charge them $9.95 per product. Should I go through each store and propose the product? Its pretty odd for a 18 yr old to sell this product, but you think they'll still take me srsly? I've already done private labeling, so it looks decent.

What do you think, should I make the move and go to stores and show them the product etc.?

Product is in the U.S and I'm in Canada so it shouldn't take long to come.

Should I start emailing a ton of them and see which ask for a sample then go from there?

As part of your research you are going to want to find out what the mark up is for the industry that you are targeting. For instance, if you were selling to a grocery store and you had a product that would move off the shelves at a decent rate so the stock would rotate (Google that also as part of your research) and it made the Supermarket 25% you would be in the hunt.

If you are selling to a sporting goods store and mention 25% they would have no interest as their markup is higher.

So, you'll want to have part of your pitch, "Mr Store Owner, this product sells via my website for 17.85 and we sell X amount of them a month at that price. If you sell it at that price you'll make X % which is about X percent higher than the standard industry average for a XYZ store."

You need to show them how this is profitable for them to carry.

Also, you'll probably have to give them terms like net 30 with a 2% discount if they pay inside 10 days (again, see what is standard for that industry).

Going in at 18 years old is fine if you go in with more data than a 1 TB hard drive can hold so they see you know your stuff. Be sure to have a quality business card too, not some Vistaprint discount POS but one on quality paper as this will probably not be a one call close and you need them as part of your intro anyway.

One more thing, 18 and you have your own private labeled product making money. OutStanding!

most definitely you should go and show them your product, make sure you have all your info prepared for when they might question your profitability.

You should send them an e-mail in advance, so they can prepare themselves if they want to. You can either ask for a meeting in the e-mail where you present your product, or you can present your product and just meet up and hope to see the decision-maker.

When you e-mail them first they will as mentioned have the time to prepare if they wish to, but this also gives you an advantage. You can get them off guard by asking if they have read your e-mail presenting your product once you meet the decision-maker, and this is a well known strategy when people attempt to get their products into franchises etc.

Definitely go for it - if you have a quality product at a competitive price and there is a market then you are golden.

As btb said though, research everything as much as possible - knowledge is power.

I'm going to have to do a shit ton of math now, and I should get started on it. Learning a crap ton now on all this.

Yup planning to do that as its easier and far better to manage and convert.

Hopefully I don't get my ass handed to me in each store. lol

One other thing, emailing them to get an appointment is a terrible idea for a small business. Just pop in and get your face and product in front of them.

You'll get a lot more sales that way although you'll get a lot of "Bleep you, get out" too.

The sales outweigh the bleeps 99.9% of the time.

Nothing ventured nothing gained. Don't worry about failure or humility. Don't give up if you get turned away, it's super important that you get the numbers so you need to visit like 50 stores or something.

If you get 49 nos and 1 yes- bingo!

Even if they are all a no you have 50 lots of experience trying to sell, and you have some real market research, so try and learn something from every store as well.

Also, say if you don't get any sales at all its a great confidence booster and you can learn and craft your pitch to see what works and what you need to change.
