The recent news about Hillary Clinton having her own email server got me thinking about if it's possible to have your own webpage server. Can I set-up my own webpage server on a computer in my home and host my own websites?

Any recommendations for an online forum where the membership actually knows something about internet marketing, etc...?

This has very little to do with Internet Marketing and more with IT. So with just hearing you say that, I would advise you to spend the $5 a month and concentrate on whatever it is you're plan is.

Yea it's 2015 of course you could, but it's probably not worth your time/money

This is possible yes and if you have the knowledge it can be done but it's going to take a lot of time to set up and get working fully not to mention a lot of electricity to keep the server running and online at all times to prevent an outage. I personally would pay for hosting and stick to that at least then you don't have the worry of it going down because of a problem.

Sure you can, however it's not worth it.

you need to ask your ISP to provide you static IP (Dedicated IPV4) and you need 100MBPS uplink and good amount of BW, any good PC like Core i3 with 4GB to 8GB ram is enough for hosting few wordpress sites,
then you have to install Linux (Centos Latest version) or Windows 2008 or Windows 2012 server on your PC and you are almost ready to use your PC as a webserver.

PS: the cost of Static ip and 100MBPS uplink will cost you tooooo much so its not worth, so better you spend $5 for a shared hosting or $20 approximate for a VPS hosting.

It's pretty easy to setup a windows box to host your website and e-mail. If you just have a little knowledge about how to do so, it takes aprox less than 1 hour.. have done that hundred of times in the past.

You'll waste time trying to set up security, optimizing the setup, etc. Just pay a hosting company and focus on IM.

You definatly can, but you need sufficent internet, computer dedicated to a server OS, along with mail server installed.
Its really not worth the effort just for a mail server

Everthing you read here is true. Hosting your own website is not worth it anymore. Your time is precious, so just tie up with a quality hosting service and focus on bigger things.

I agree with most here... find some cheap hosting there are thousands out there, and get your stuff hosted there.. it's even more secure.

For the sake of abilities, yes it's possible . You do not even have to have static IP, you can setup dynamic DNS update with many available services on the interwebs, many of them are free of charge, but from the economic point of view it's not good in most cases. Running the server at home might be problematic, loading of pages will take much longer than on professional hosting + you would have to invest in UPS so that your server is up and running when the power is not supplied.

If you want to train your skills it's very good idea, I myself have been playing with debian + apache + mysql , ssh and other things long time ago and have setup the server at home just for fun, but if you want to treat the IM stuff seriously it's a lot better idea to invest in either cheap vps or shared host. You will save lot's of time since almost all hosts these days have easy to use panel with options to install lots of useful scripts like wordpress or drupal with a click of a button.

It's possible yes but with so many hosting companies out there now would it be worth your while? I personally myself would not go into this kind of business if I am honest but would instead look into something else. It would take a lot of work to see results and even gain interest but if you were serious about it, it can be done.

Lots of ways to do this - you can install XAMP or WAMP on a machine, and then configure your domain to point to the IP address.

Or you could even use your mobile phone - http://zurl.uni.me/668pc35

Sure it can be done, even it isn't wise in my eyes as it is to cost & work intensive :)
