Hi, got quite a question for you guys today. I 've had a bit of extra time to play around hosting wordpress server and wanted to check out how feasible would it be to protect it to a decent level. After some research I read upon making ubuntu openvpn with virtualbox. So now I am wondering how good it is, and if it's good what's the way to go about making it? I checked out on couple of git guides like streisand, but I am also wondering how much would it affect the speed of my wp hosting on windows?

Speed issues aside, if your ISP ever realizes you're running a server you'll be asked to upgrade to a business account, or risk having your service cut entirely.

From a performance and security perspective, you can get a cheap VPS for only a dollar or two a month that will be far faster and more efficient than your home PC and consumer-grade ISP.

I agree with the post above. Why would you even want to self host when you can get a vps for as much as a burger?

I like the idea of self hosting, the just plug in my server and its all running here in front of me kind of thing. Any ideas how to go about it? :)

EDIT: I used to run with hostgator's hosting but dayum did I get excited with the idea of self hosting , tbh it ain't about the money but more of satisfaction of having it ;D

Your ISP blocks port 80 and 443, so you will NEED a pass-through server to forward the connection, and the upload speed limitations of your home ISP means that at the best of times, your site will take 90+ seconds to load. Then once the bots find an open server running on consumer-grade hardware, your entire network will be compromised or shut down entirely.

As soon as your ISP sees that you're running an unauthorized server, which they will, very quickly, you will be told to purchase a much more expensive business account. If you refuse, your home address will have a permanent ban on internet service, ending your IM career before it begins.

What you're planning is essentially the tech equivalent of selling drugs on the courthouse steps. No matter how good the idea seems at the time, the reality is going to be far worse than you imagine.
