can anyone explain or point me to something that will allow me to self host and play videos on my wordpress site?

I don't want to embed from youtube or video sites like that. I want the video self hosted, but can't seem to figure out how to host and play a video.

    Ask your host about it.

Use the flowplayer plugin mentioned above.

You don't necessarily need to contact your provider, add these to your htaccess:

    Extend the list as needed.

Try this and post the results.

There are a bunch of plugins with the name FlowPlayer in them. Can someone link to the one you are talking about?

I am using the MediaElement player, its HTML5 based so will work on non-flash browsers too :) They have a wordpress plugin and its easy to use with shortcodes for embedding videos. Don't do this on shared hosting, really, just don't. Need a VPS or better to stream video. Youtube is easy to embed if you can't afford to host your own videos.

I use JW player. You can self host your own videos and embed them with the JW player plugin :).
