I'm sure I'm not the first person to think about this, but I haven't seen anyone asking this question.

Since G has devalued or even put a penalty on backlinks such as spam comments, article directories, and forum profiles -

What if everyone started building those type of links to the big online retailers like Amazon, Overstock, JCPenny and so on?

That way, when G alters its algo to discount those links, they hammer the major retailers as well. And in turn, the retailers complain that they shouldn't be penalized since they can't control who links to them.

But I am not trying to damage or knock down those retailers, only block or neutralize G from devaluing those types of links.

This could effectively neutralize G from discounting those links.

Any opinions?

@MovieMan,

We already know that when google "devalues" links, that doesn't mean that a link will damage a sites ranking. Rather, building lots of spammy links dilutes the value of strong links, making it harder to move your rank higher after you have thousands of crap links. I.E. the more links it will take for every progressive movement.

If we were to spam the majors all day long, it wouldn't affect them at all. Not a single bit. They already have tens of millions of links anyway.

Thanks Taktical,

Wouldn't matter. It would have to be a widespread problem that affects huge percentages of sites worldwide for G to even CONSIDER changing their algo.

I truly doubt it. G doesn't like these links because they are spammy and provide low quality links. What will it do if you further spam them with those giant retailers you've mentioned in your op? G wouldn't change their algo just because a massive influx of spam links going to JCPenny.com or Overstock.com wouldn't even dent their rankings. Even if their rankings were to waver, why would G even care about it? Spam links are spam links.

I think G would care because these retailers spend millions on Adwords, and if they start complaining, G will listen.

Remember that whole JCPenny SEO thing a while ago? When G found out that they were using paid links, they just manually kicked their SERPs down because they did a manual review of their site. Anything we blackhatters do, if a manual review from G is involved, who knows what would happen; I just know an algo change would not =/

I think the fact is that no backlink should ever hurt your rankings so doing this would probably actually strengthen their likn profile at worst and at best have no effect whatsoever. Nice idea but I just don't see it having the desired effect.

Besides, organizing a group of self interested pricks like us would never work.

after read question there is first thing what come to my mind.

If G make algo to devalue spam links can they make code for exception from?

eg. if found amaz0n == do nothing

simpe..

Well if that were the case the Big G would see it and hence we could expect another update to its Algorithm.

How about you just see which links are easy/efficient to get that google does like?
Keep researching and you'll find those ways.

It's good that G has the ability to deliver quality results (in most cases). That's why they have that amount of traffic, that's why they are that successful and we all can earn money from them. So why change the game? It's thought very short.
