is it smart to disable comments right away and re-enable once the site grows?

If you are worried about spam, then yea, you can disable then re-enable later. Use a captcha to lesson your spam, and perhaps add a question for commenter (are you human?).

I would suggest just manually approving comments throughout the whole time you own the blog. You can get some long tail traffic from your comments.

thanks for the answers guys, but i mean disable them so it doesn't look so empty as a new blog.

If your using WordPress askimet will take care of 99.9999% of the spam for you.
