Profitable as in niches that you can make and sell software for or "profitable" as in highly paid as an employee?

If it's the former. Application/Business-specific tools will always be the most profitable to make effort wise for a small team. You can see an example right here. There's an ecosystem of software vendors on BHW all sorts of black-hat tools. That's Business-specific software right there.

If it's the latter, any niche in software engineering (be it systems engineering, frontend/backend etc) can be highly paid if you are senior enough provided you grow on the seniority/career ladder.
