Seeking advice from Indians about long-term travel

I am an American, but I have always been fascinated with India. I am considering living cheaply in India for a short time, while I continue to work on IM. Perhaps, even make a few business connections but mostly I'd want to visit for pleasure. What would you recommend for an American wanting to stay maybe 1-2 months in India. What cities, and what type of housing would you recommend? What are the safest places for non-Indians?

If you're a nature lover and like serene environment with lot of beaches, consider visiting Goa or Kerala. Although there are lot of places similar to this, these two places are commonly visited by tourists and considered to be safe and people are friendly.
