Hi all. Firstly, I know that there is no way to remain 100% anonymous online. However, I need to aim for that and I am looking for info where I can get advice on some of my ideas.
This is for 100% legal purposes involving journalism/whistleblowing. I need to communicate with people online and after researching for a whole year now, I just can't work out which is best. Signal - uses Google for delivering messages and needs a phone number. Fail. Threema - Swiss, looks good, but needs payment which ties the user details in. Fail. Matrix - Looks good but I am not technical enough to setup my own chat server with their script, which I think is necessary. Tox Chat - Nice, P2P encrypted, but totally buggy and unusable.
After learning a lot about this, I am now at the point of either walking away (big shame to do that and not sure I can) or getting a thinkpad with libreboot and/or TAILS operating system installed, and using Tor. But that (I think) will just put a target on my back as I will be joining a group of criminals where the authorities spend a lot of time for obvious reasons.
If anyone in here has any comments or thoughts on this I would be very grateful. More importantly, does anyone know of a good forum online where this sort of stuff is discussed by knowledgeable experts where I can get some help to set up a secure comms system?
Oh and PS - One of the single most important tasks I need a secure machine for is uploading videos to YT without ANY traceability to me. I considered VPS (payment problem) and other ideas but just not sure whether it's even possible. Again any thoughts appreciated. Thanks everyone.
