Searching for Affiliate Programs

As and admitted newbie.... I was wondering what techniques you experts use to seek out affiliate programs. I don't just want to click around and hunt an peck, but I also have already been turned down by some of the major players. I am working to improve my web site, but want to be given a chance in the market also.

Any help is very much appreciated!!!

Thanks!
