I'm redesigning my website, and I need to find a good search platform for my database.

Its a HUGE database, well over 100 million records.
So I need some help pointing me in the direction.

I used Sphinx on my last database, and it didn't seem fast enough.

I'm now looking at Apache Solr, what's everyone's opinion on this?

Good search server, and never had any issues with it.

There are some big sites using Apache Solr (like Zappos and the New York Public Library).
You can see some more sites here (these use Drupal + Apache Solr): https://drupal.org/node/447564

    What's your take on Sphinx?

    Good, better, best than Solr?

Haven't tried Sphinx, so couldn't say for certain.

The only thing I can recommend is to test it out on a local server, VPS, or Dedicated.
In theory, Apache Solr should be able to handle the amount of records you require, but everyone's situation is different.
