The best steps are to read through this and other good forums for a while until you have a basic grasp of the subject. Then maybe you can ask slightly more directed and specific questions!

I would suggest you to use the search button before creating a thread since it would help you in getting answers to your questions more quickly and accurately. Also, check out the sticky threads in the link building, whitehat SEO and Blackhat SEO sections since you will find some really cool information there as well.

In Downloads there are some / many hints and downloads, with which you can check your website for errors, missing tags, compete to other websites, ranking, valuation etc.
Some of them are VERY helpful. As you say "SEO" only, I believe you mean "readable and indexable websites" for google bots etc.

0 - work out which keywords you want to rank for. Use exact match (for now) for your research.
1 - build a website, which is genuinely good-looking, based in Wordpress. Make sure it has a blog section with a few unique articles published.
2 - install Yoast SEO plugin
3 - make sure you have keyword on the page (title, h1 and main text), but in a natural context, ie don't make title 'widgets, blue widgets, cheap widgets', but rather 'Widgets - an awesome place to buy them'
4 - build social profiles which link to your site: Twitter/Google+/Facebook/
5 - Google SEOmoz beginners' guide, bearing in mind some of their link building tactics are a waste of time, think which will realistically work. Also make sure you find out what the Penguin update is.
6 - experiment with what they say. I did this for about a year, and yes - it did work and I started making good money following their advice, coupled with enormous persistence
7 - come back here, because at this point you'll have a much, much better idea of what you're doing

This is just my advice. If you want to take more risks with buying software, spending money on services, etc, rather than just with your time, start with tactics you see here.

I can tell you this, if you are not willing to do some basic research on your own and THEN ask for clarifications when you are confused you will NEVER, I repeat NEVER make it in IM!! NEVER!!

IM takes motivated people who are willing to work and dive right in, there is very little spoon feeding and people giving exact details in what is working for them. If they do they quickly saturate their money making methods.

What you SHOULD do is read the sub forums, go over the FAQ's, use the search function. After getting a broad overview then start asking questions to clear up any new concerns you have.

The Whitehat forum is a good place to start so you get an idea of what Google is looking for. http://www.blackhatworld.com/blackhat-seo/f30-white-hat-seo/

Work as a seo va first.. you will get to know the basics...

Remember with SEO it is never a level playing field wherein methods work on an evergreen basis

SEO is a in state of change at all times and as such SEO methods need to be applied and used continuously in order to maintain ranking and indexing in the SEs

Perhaps all that is here already in the know, that search for keywords that are relevant and interesting content that is part of on page seo, and way more natural.

Followed by several steps,
Keyword research,
Good quality content,
Building links,
Get sharing and further steps should be followed and keep tracking the sites.
