    Not Another Google Thread!

I see many posts here every time Google slaps some new penalty or algo update which wipes out thousands of sites and ruins small businesses and there are always calls for things like dropping google and moving to bing etc but of course the problem is that makes no difference because it doesn't matter if you dont use or target google in any way, what matters is the general surfing public still uses google so as long as you depend on SEO you are still screwed.

It strikes me that the problem here is one of education. I have met many people who I thought were reasonably computer savvy yet it turned out they dont know the difference between a browser and the google search box. These people will always use google because that is all they know. I'd hazard a guess and say the majority of internet users are similar - this needs to be changed. :amish:

Now probably this is a dumb idea or an old idea and everyone here will likely ignore it or find various reasons why it is a bad idea but anyway.. between all the BHW members you all must control an enormous amount of traffic - millions of eyeballs pass through your sites every day I would think. So you have an opportunity there to educate the unwashed masses, let them know there are alternatives to google. Even something simple like a small link box containing links to things like duckduckgo, startpage, some niche search engines perhaps, and even bing! Use some catchy text to get their attention - play on their privacy/big brother fears for example..

Now of course you may be losing some traffic through those links in the short term (but you could always show them after a visitor opted in for example or even just not include links (let them google for duckduckgo ;) )) but in the long term you are dragging people away from google and freeing them (and you) from google tyranny.. and word of mouth will spread the effect beyond those who pass through your sites. Such a grassroots campaign will eventually hurt google and it can only benefit us.

Anyway, that is all.. back to crying over my lost ranks. ;)

The problem with your plan is that Google IS Android and over 55% of smart phones sold last quarter use Android.

If you are on Android you are almost forced to use Google.

Google is king and it is here to stay.

We the peasants must bend to Googles whims in order to survive. It is that simple. You may not like to hear it but it is the truth.

Still that's a matter of education - you don't have to search google just because you have android on your phone. Even in the default browser you can set the search to use bing or yahoo instead of google and of course you can install another browser which would include more options.

Yep it may seem somewhat sisyphean but they just need to be convinced, cajoled, bribed, scared or otherwise made to see the light.. overcome the inertia in some and they will then give their friends & family a nudge as well. No different to any advertising/marketing campaign really. Like some chinese bloke once (probably) said - the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

To get the most out of your android you needs to use Google.

But most people would use all that effort to do SEO and monetizing traffic rather than trying to educate their traffic. Nice idea but majorly flawed.

It shouldn't be much effort though - just a bit of static html to paste into a template or even just a pre-made graphic. The idea is to raise awareness amongst visitors that google is not the internet, there are alternatives for search. Doesn't even need to be a link, just a message/image to educate them passively. When millions of people are exposed to such a message multiple times it will sink in.

Another problem you're going to have is that the people here getting the most eyeballs on their sites are ranked well in google and don't particularly want to see a change. I know I don't.

True, but as long as you rely on SEO traffic from Google you are at their mercy and could lose those eyeballs in an instant as a result of some future algo update. Or maybe you will manage to stay one step ahead through expertise or luck or both but nothing is certain.

    To borrow from Niemöller..

First they came for the black hatters, and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a black hatter.
Then they came for the white hatters, and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a white hatter.
Then they came for me, and there was no one left to speak for me.

A little over dramatic but what the hell.. ;)

I think the best way to strike back is with a bunch of bots turned loose in the wild using proxies to do nothing my click the adwords ads. If the advertiser knows he is going to be hit with click fraud he can suspend his campaign or switch it to bing.

A bot is a simple thing that can be created that can destroy google's revenue stream.

Look at how much that attack on Godaddy cost Godaddy. Imagine a few thousand bots using proxies and botnets doing nothing but seeking out google ads and clicking them.

If you were getting zero ROI would you keep paying google?

We need to bring them to their knees. A fraction of the effort many of us put into scripts that drop links would be more than adequate to hit Google hard.

But could also get you into trouble with the long arm of the law.. I'd leave such tactics to the likes of anonymous. A campaign to educate people and turn them away from google wont get anyone in any trouble. Word of mouth is a powerful force.
