I am finding that a lot of my competitors are using scrolling marquees to hide a bunch of the keywords that they stuff. I am probably going to follow suit but I wanted to ask for any tips or things that people have learned from experience SEO-wise that may negatively effect my ranking.

Do any of you use marquees and if so are there any drawbacks? Can I have something where I have a bunch of keywords but only 300px of the marquee shows at one time? Technically i know how to do this but I want to know if google will penalize me for it.

    Thanks

Stuffing keywords - no matter how tricky you do it - is always something Google doesn't like.

You might be able to trick the google bot now, but future updates will probably catch up with this trick (if it even works) and you will get punished in the rankings. There's also the risk of getting a manual check of your website.

So in short - if/when Google finds out that you are stuffing keywords, they will penalize you. Depending on what type of site you have, it might be worth the risk - but I would probably wait and see if other people in here have any experience with the marquee trick.

Writing relevant articles will get you the keywords in a way that Google loves, so this would be the safest option. When Google penalizes your competitors, and you have good quality articles with all the good keywords, you'll be happy about that choice ;) it's more time consuming (or costly) though :)

    Thanks for the reply.
It's a local IT guy competitor. He is #1-3 in serps so it looks like it is working. I was just thinking about doing it because I need content on my index page and there is nothing but buttons. I could keep it clean with the marquee and I would have text that is complete sentences and not just keywords at random.

I'd question first what the definition of keyword stuffing is in this case. If it's simply a matter of pushing the kw density beyond 3%, I'd wonder why you'd even do it, given the risk and that the recent algorithm updates have deprecated the value of kw density. I'd want to know why you think keyword stuffing is the secret to your competitor's success.

As far as the marquee goes, I want to use mine in order to show rotating backlinks and youtube videos as a way of getting people to click into the site vs. backing out and leaving.

It's the first thing I notice when I see the page and they are ranked very well for a bunch of keywords I am targeting.

I don't want to stuff a bunch of keywords though, I just don't have any content on my index page and I need to find ways to take care of that while keeping it clean.

I don't want to copycat them, I am actually hoping they get penalized for what they are doing. I just think it would be a good way for me to get content on that page, even though I am not stuffing nearly as much as them.

Dont use them bro. They suck for long term traffic. Its better if you do good SEO and make sure that they are done with unique content.

Can you expand on that for me? Why would it suck long term? I was thinking about using the marquee to list the nearby cities that I do business in. I figure it would be a good way to have those cities on my page without the page looking spammy. Maybe just one line marquee at bottom of the page.
