Like switchjohnny said, wishlist member.
I've tried 3-4 different membership plugins and wishlist is by far the easiest to use.
You'll lose out on some valuable functionality if you try to cut corners on arguably the most important aspect of your membership site. (the membership part...)
At $97 I think wishlist is well worth it. Especially if you are taking this project seriously.

Wishlist is $197 for a single license, $297 for unlimited and the ones available that never get updated. I'd rather pay for certain things, this being one of them. Porn I'll never pay

s2member is great and no cost and accepts monthly subscriptions via pp.

Magento has it built into their core on the Community Edition. They call it Recurring Profiles but it only works with PayPal Express Checkout. It's free though and it works.
