Scraping forum post from old dead forum ?

Hi my fellow bhwers we all know managing a new forum takes time,
Money and many other resource.
I want to know if scraping post from niche related forum ( forum that does no more function)
through wayback machine?

This my second question:
Do you think it is advisable to use a plugin in which will look like many members are online through Who is online list? Because people will probably not join a forum with two members online.

I wouldn't scrape the content, but that's just me. No other reasons than I like having something unique and avoid possible copyright claims.

Moving onto your second questions: forums notoriously suffer from the chicken and egg situation. People want to be on a forum with lots of content, but you need people on the forum to get lots of content.

My suggestion, instead of launching the forum right away, setup an email list. Tease people onto the list, then, once you have a good number of people on the list, then launch the forum. You'll hopefully get a rush of members to start posting and not have to worry about slowly bootstrapping it.

When I did a similar type of site I needed content, so I used http://www.random-name-generator.info/ for the site, then posted questions etc, after time I started getting real users. Bit like fake twitter followers to seed an account. It just makes it look busy. You could also hire people to engage in the forum to start it off

The technical name for the phenomenon is the "network effect." Basically, the value of a forum is directly correlated to the number of people participating on that forum. It's a notorious problem for forums. Would you sign up for a forum that has zero posts and 5 total members? Most people just move on.

You can see this in numerous businesses including credit cards. If you wanted to start a credit card, you would need two things to happen:

1. Stores need to accept your credit card
2. People need to carry your credit card around and be willing to use it.

But here are the two problems:

1. Stores only want to accept credit cards that people actually use.
2. People only want to use credit cards that stores accept.

You have to simultaneously get people carrying your credit card around, and stores to accept them at the same time. Just like people only want to participate on an already active forum, but you need people participating to have an active forum.

Seeding a forum is one of the known solutions to this problem.
