scenario for the perfect crime.

Let the plot begin with the chiefs of Micr0s0ft, G00gle, fb, and top bankers assemble on a luxury yatch with their hot secretaries... Let the ship be taken to south pole by your hot women in black... Those guys can gift you 500 million wwithout a blink... But this time, they choose not to. The us govt steps in... Your girls go into special hot action... Even after 2 decades, those guys will still be rulers and not too old...

Nice idea: This one gets into the scenario: ransom. So I would create some major havoc in a multi billion dollar company and than ask a ransom to stop it. Problem: How do I cash in the ransom? If I would ask for cash, I would get a truckload of marked bills. If I would ask for a wire, it could be traced back. Unless I could come up with a scenario how to withdraw 500 mln in a couple of hours.

You see, not so easy to come up with the perfect crime :)

I don't understand why does the story have to happen in the future? What does "being in the future" contribute to the plot that "being in the present time" does not?

I didn't mean things that weren't plausible - that's getting into the science fiction/fantasy genre.

I was thinking more along the lines of current technology and where it is going in the near future.

For example, right now, with contactless payments, a security expert has demonstrated it's possible to steal money from people just by getting the right piece of equipment close to their cards - he even showed how it's possible to circumvent the payment limit and steal thousands instead of tens of dollars.

Now that's a scenario for a potentially untraceable crime - walking through a crowd of people stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Hmm, one one hand, future technology can modify ways crimes are committed (or pursued by government). But again, I would like it to stay "plausible". I mean, I could say that the crooks ask for a ransom of 500 mln to be wired into bank account X, and from there, they will use the latest and greatest blackhat wiring software, that wires that amount into 100 legal accounts without leaving a trace. But is that realistic?? Actually, I think that in the future it will be more and more difficult to do anything (be it communication, phones, internet, transfers) without leaving traces. I also don't want the story to turn into a geek dissertation explaining in 25 pages of technology terms, how they pulled this off by using software xyz or encryption tools ABC.

So to resume: If I wrote "and the crooks wired the 500 million by using untraceable software to their account", would you believe that in today's world? And in 30-40 years from now?

In first instance, I had placed the story in today's world and had selcted Google as the 'victim company'. But after some research and talking with my lawyers, it turned out that that would be a very bad idea. If I would like to use a large worldwide communication conglomerate I would have to use an imaginary one with a non-existing name in today's world. Moreover, as pointed out, placing it in the future (but not too far) gives me some more freedom in what is possible and what not.

They would have to withdraw it and put it into another bank that isn't part of the SWIFT system to make it untraceable any transfer of money on SWIFT can be tracked.

Yes, but how to withdraw 500 mln? Just walk up to your bank and ask them to fill up the truck outdoors? :)

Then use an imaginary one, writers do that all the time.
Also "what is possible and what not' is totally up to you, as long as you don't pull it straight out from your ass. PoI introduces not 1, but 2 all powerful AI Gods in the present time and the viewers believe it because in reality we are trying to build an AGI, so the idea is not totally out there. Of course PoI is sci-fi so they can do more, but there are still plenty of things you can do to make your story sounds plausible in the present without venturing too much into sci-fi territory.

When you place a story into a different timeline, it should have a purpose. Normally because there is an event/ technological improvement/ political change... that fundamentally changes the world as we know it, and the story then also reflects how the new world affects characters living in it. Robocop has robot police and then human/robot hybrid, Minority Report is about a world when police can see murders before they happen, The Hunger Game happens in a dystopian future where the world is destroyed by war and children are forced to take part in a game to kill each other. So if you place your story in the (near) future, but the world still remains largely the same then I fail to see the point of it.

First Plan some Big RObbery & Act Upon it. than in Jail Write your Book & you Become a Reality Writer.lol..Seriously you are a writer?

The ship... It is made of gold! Your hero (villain?) takes it to the bottom of Antarctica and stays there. Those big ones run their empires through a secret under polar cap satellite... For... You. You see.... You are that villain and this is your autobiography where in the end, you reveal the perfect crime you executed.

A clone of the ship and those biggies, clones of course, are 'found' off the Bermuda Triangle region... The world hears the story you want it to hear from them. The ship vanishes in the Triangle... You real big ones run the businesses from your hideout. The bankers and their top accountants take over paypa..l. The rest is easy as f' ck for you! :D

P.s.
Don't ever screw my pp account then... :)

BTW, your thoughts disappoint me! Even if you get a great working method, you are sure to ruin it with that level of ideas you produce... Lol. Jk

Think big out of the bigger box for biggest outcomes! :)

Well, I'm at my 10th book and I make a decent living from my sales. I don't know if that qualifies as writer/author. But you can call it "creative writing" if you want :)

Money won't exist in 50 years, only digital currency .

I agree. In the not too distant future, money in it's current form (bills, coins) won't exist anymore. Which means that ALL your transactions will be traceable. Which makes it even more difficult in the future to transform a ransom in 'anonymous' money . And which is another reason to place the story in a time where there is still some 'real/old' money around .

You mentioned Fort Knox... why not make a story about the perfect crime where the story is about preparing to rob Fort Knox and when they finally got there - its empty :)

This is the typical James Bond scenario. But all James Bond scenarios are completely unrealistic (but entertaining). If you look at oceans 11/12/13 it gets closer to reality, because they rob a casino, using some magical gadgets to circumvent the security systems. The only thing which is not realistic is, that I doubt that you can find 500 mln in cash in a casino. And in the movies, they walk out with a couple of bags with money. While in reality, 500 mln is a huge truckload..

And? What's the plot? My story is about 'the perfect crime'. So it is not the good guy that wins, but the crooks that get away with it.

I hope that this is part of your research and not a way to save on time.

A good novel takes some research as well as a creative mind. If this isn't you doing research (my feeling) but just taking an easy way out then your novel will probably suck.
