Scariest movie suggestions?

So you want to be scared? Try any Adam Sandlers movie. Scares me how stupid people can be about every single aspect of life for money.

Don't know why but old horror really turns me on with my GF. I'm serious... We were watching some Thai horror movie from the 80's about some Pimp fucking dead girls. Glorious...

I love Barbara Steele movies, White Zombie, Lugosi is ridiculous but somehow they manage to deliver.

But nothing's gonna EVER beat Nosferatu 1979. True, cruel sadness and suffocating ambiance. Kin ski is God.

Ha Adam Sandlers movie's are quite awful, but yeah Thai movies can be brutal. Thanks for the Nosferatu 1979 recommendation, my friends been telling me about it for years but I never get around to it. Will watch and hopefully dribble tonight ;).

Ah, finally a topic I can get behind (no pun).

I mostly watch East Asian horror movies these days. I wouldn't really call them "scary" but some definitely get under the skin.

I recommend these:

I Saw The Devil (2010)

One Missed Call (2003)

Audition (1999)

A Tale of Two Sisters (2003)

Macabre (2009)

Into The Mirror (2003)

Cure (1997)

Kansen (2004)

Since you don't want movies about witches and psychics I decided to exclude those. Also, some of these movies have Western remakes, which are quite poor in comparison, in my opinion.

...and many others that elude me at the moment. If you are into graphic novels then look up some of Junji Ito's stuff: His Uzumaki and Tomie series have live-action counterparts.

Guilty pleasures:

Mizuchi (2006)
Art of The Devil 2 (2005)
Carved (2007)
Bloody Reunion (2006)
Coming Soon (2008)
The Crone (2013)

A lot of these movies are quite unsettling. Squeamish people beware.

Now that one was hilarious!

Dude, I know. Oh and so was 13 Ghosts. I watch that movie every year and just laugh my ass off. It is so beyond ridiculous.

Have you ever seen Ghost Ship?

Where the fuck've you been?

I would suggest checking out Dario Argento's 70's and early to mid-80's stuff. I know you mentioned no "witch" movies, but his most famous film "Suspiria" is a horror movie classic, and perhaps one of the most visually stunning horror films I've ever seen. He's been a huge influence on all the other prominent horror directors that came after him. The film is also notable for it's violence and intensity, and was often heavily censored when it was released on VHS in the 80's. It's actually more of a "supernatural" film anyhow. It also turns 40 this year and is being remade, with the likes of actresses such as Tilda Swinton.

It's follow up, "Inferno" is also incredibly gorgeous and disturbing - despite the script not being quite as coherent. "Tenebrae" and "Opera", which came out in the early to mid 80's were also excellent. There are some pretty intense, bloody, and violent moments in these films.

Someone else on here mentioned "The Descent", which I will second - that's one of the best horror films in more recent years I've seen. And you can see Argento's influence all over it in terms of the lighting and use of color. I also liked it because it tip-toes the line of not knowing if what you are seeing is actually happening literally, or perhaps through the eyes of one of the characters in particular losing their mind and having a breakdown of sorts.

Another more recent film that really impressed me was a Romanian film called "ils" (also released in the US as "Them"). It's a very minimalist "home invasion" film which keeps you on the edge of your seat the whole time since you are kept in the dark most of the film as to why this is all happening. The trailer doesn't do the film justice at all, not to mention they embellish it all sorts of visual effects which aren't even in the movie at all. Oh and even better, unlike most typical home invasion films, the lead characters are smart and escape the house early on, and don't do your textbook stupid mistakes.

I was going to suggest "s&dman", but I wasn't sure how to describe it other than it's more of a realistic documentary of sorts of the underground scene/market of ultraviolent, borderline "snuff" films.

If you *really, really, really* can stomach to watch these - 2005's "Cannibal", which was based on a very true story that happened recently where a guy put an ad out requesting to let him kill and eat you (and people responded, and he ultimately carried through with it with someone, and was subsequently arrested and jailed for it). The other would be "A Serbian Film", which among other things, depicts a newborn baby being removed from the mothers womb and immediately being fucked/raped to death by a male porn star.

A few other favorites:

Irreversible - Gaspar Noe's controversial film, which is told in reverse chronology (similar to "Memento", but far better). The film is ultra violent at times, and the cinematography is absolutely jaw dropping. There are two *very* notoriously violent scenes in the film, one of which is a 10 minute rape scene, all done in one continuous shot.

Resolution - this was a direct to video release from a few years ago which got a lot of buzz and great reviews from the horror community as being a really fresh and thought provoking take on your typical "cabin in the woods" motif. It's more of a psychological horror film - slash - "meta" horror film. It's very well written, and it was a lot of fun reading other people's thoughts afterwards as to what the film was really about, and what actually went down.

Alice, Sweet Alice - This was Brooke Shield's first film, and it's also notable for pissing off the catholic church so much, that they excommunicated the director for making the film. It's a snarky criticism of late 60-s, to mid 70's suburban middle class, "white flight", "catholic" culture. It's surprisingly well made for it's time. It's also very funny with it's dark campy humor, and it's scandalous ending, lol.

"The changeling" made me shit my pants. Also very good movie in general.

Have you ever seen Ghost Ship?

No, never seen that. I don't watch many films these days.

Another one that a few friends said was extremely scary but I found laughable was Candyman. Didn't find it scary in the least!

It feels nice to have a thread like this once a while haha! been reading too many IM stuff

Omg totally. Also Leprechaun. Freaking hilarious man. He literally killed a guy by jumping on him with a pogo stick. I laughed so hard at that movie I lost my voice.

Ghost Ship is pretty old. Like the late 90s, early 2000s. You should check it out when you get a chance. It's like Final Destination (which is also ridiculous).

Shit, that reminds me of a couple of weeks ago here when I felt something like a hand grabbing my face. I keep my bedroom door locked, so to say that I was... surprised was an understatement.

I screamed like a little girl.

Dunno why wasn't mentioned yet, but great and scary: Insidious. And this check this one also: Dead Silence. Bouth r suuuuuuuper scary, lol :D

Hostel, Human Centipede, silent hill, Resident Evil. I think most of the rest have already been suggested.

Try watching Asian Horror movies , Japanese , Korean and Thai. Thailand is good at making ghost stories.
