Scanning for proxies with verizon?

I have fios, and I heard it's not a good idea to scan for proxies if you have cable or dsl since your ISP will get pissed, why is that? Does it use up a lot of resources?

I've scanned in the past for a couple days straight, nothing happened, just wondering if its a bad idea to do though.
