This morning I got a nice SMS message that I had won the lottery! :p

From : +44 7769 605505
Message :
CONGRATULATIONS!
Your Tel.No was selected and won 250,00 UK sterling in NOKIA NEW YEAR Promo. To claim send email to [email protected] our tel. +44 7005 938190

Interestingly enough, I live in NZ. I don't own a Nokia personally, But Nokia's are the most popular phone here, so it is definitely conceivable that they get a pretty good hit rate with people who do own Nokia phones, and so continue on through.

Usually these things aren't scams persay. They just request Birth Certs etc. Basic identity theft.

over in Indonesia and singapore this type of marketing is huge since most people there carry 2 or 3 phones.
There are plenty ways you can make some $$ doing this here in the US.
let me know if your interested, I do have the hook up on a 50k sms blasts to random numbers if ya got the right offer.
 
SMS blasting is the dirtiest form of spamming. I have absoultely no problem with spam e-mail, as all you have to do is delete it. But when my phone starts ringing at 2am with a spam text, I want to kill someone.

This just happened to my wife recently, and she got 79 SMS messages in a matter of 2 hours. I ended up finding the company and called them. I told them what I would do to them if they didn't stop. Needless to say the messages stopped.

Either way, SMS spamming is dirty, and if anyone ever does it to me, they will regret it.

i in UK, and i just called both numbers...
numbers do not exsist.
could you please check you entered the numbers correctly and i will try them again if you like.
i really dislike these scammers.
 
in most cases the numbers that are getting the sms are from a site that has sold them. SMS works along the same lines as email blasts.
The list of numbers are opt in from a source. Somewhere somehow the person has entered their number on a form. So its not as dirty as you may think.

Negative. I have never entered my number anywhere. Trust me. And I know of several other people that get them aswell. It just a large sweep of numbers that they send to.
 
Pyronaut, I would call you Lucky, since you got it in the year 2011. We, Indians got it for the first time before years and we are still on someones list that sends it out!

He he yes, I still have 10 unread spam message in my mobile! Daily I get around 20 to 30 SMS like this. I just select all and delete LOL.

Exactly what pyro said. It's not hard to find a cellphone range (ie: 202-115-XXXX) then take those XXXX and count from 0 to 9999.
 
Ignorance is no excuse when it comes to what is legal and what is not. It is definitely illegal and can be intrusive, and even creepy at times. Unsolicited text messages have very little effect on consumers.
 
I can not express in words just how much I hate being on the receiving end of this form of spam.

I would probably see things differently if I were the one doing the spaming though.
 
The carriers could easily make an SMS filter/blocker, there is not incentive for them to do so. They make money on every text sent and received.
