For sites with 5k–50k pages, how are you handling internal linking at scale?

Are you using automation, custom scripts, or manual silos?

I use rules-based automation for most internal links, with manual adjustments on key hub pages. Fully manual silos don’t scale well for me at this size.

My advise is to work on structure first, then automation, if you have 5,000 to 50,000 pages. utilize controlled automation, such rule-based internal linking, to complement the structure you've built with distinct category silos and a solid hierarchy. Don't utilize entirely random auto-linking.

Custom scripts can assist a lot, but make sure that links are still useful and focused on the user. In the end, internal linking should do more than just increase the number of links; it should also make it easier to find things and make topics clearer.

The dev team writes custom code to manage internal links. A large website is always automated in certain aspects, and internal linking is one of them.
