It is, until it isn't.
I have seen people get domains blacklisted, as soon as they set the external link or put it iin the bio - account is banned.
It is a footprint and a glaring one at that. Keep under the radar and you'll be ok. Get it noticed and not

Easy way to get all the accounts mass banned if you happen to run into an issue. What's good for the goose isn't always good for the..

Could I just use a URL shortener and be good to go like bitly?

I would never do that if you think that the domain behind that shortner could be blacklisted.
Since any website can trace back the parent urls easily. So url shortners are of no use here unless if you want to track clicks.

I guess I don't understand exactly how shortened urls could be tracked if they we're cloaked to send crawlers to a safe page but I will take your word for it.

bit.ly links are followed to get actual URL, I know this for a fact.
However, if you can detect the ISG server checking your link and cloak it you are good to go.
Another method is to use a tumblr blog and put a javascript redirect on it. The ISG check is just resolving the 301/302 redirects of bitly, not the full JS to the best of my knowledge

Let me help you out and try to explain it really quick. URL shortners(i.e. bit.ly or whatever it is people are using these days) aren't cloaking your URL , all they're doing is redirecting it. Same goes for a 301 redirect. So it's easy for IG crawlers (or any other ones for that matter) to find the destination url because essentially it's still right there. True cloaking will send the IG crawlers and reviewers to a safe page of your choosing, and send your customers to your money page. That's the reason why true cloakers cost so much money, because they're constantly updating there database with IPs of new crawlers and reviewers, in turn keeping your page sage.
