I've noticed I've been getting a big spike in traffic from russia lately. My site is in English, and they are direct entries to deep pages.... doesn't really make sense. Any thoughts on that?

Bot traffic.
what do they get out of sending bots to my site?
They are trying to exploit your site in one or many ways: collecting emails for spam, posting comments with backlinks to sites with fake pharmaceutical products (very lucrative business), finding vulnerabilities in your site and using them to create hidden pages to promote the same fake pharmaceutical crap (see the cases of high PR Edu sites that were getting top SERP for words like Viagra), finding vulnerabilities in your site and using them to infect your visitors with malware.
I'm usually cautious with traffic from countries like Russia and China and I try to find out what they are up to, because usually nothing good comes out from those IP's. Russians (or the so called Russian Business Network) make very very good money selling fake male enhancing pills, spamming and managing botnets.

;You didn't tell what kind of keywords they come in with. You also have to remember that both Russia and China have huge amount of population and they use different search engines (Yandex and Baidu) so it could be you're ranking good there without you knowing.
I doubt they're bots though like some previous posters said. Connectivity to western countries is poor from both Russia and especially China and the hardware and costs are higher. There's no reason for them to use Russian/Chinese hosting.. this is internet, you can base your stuff anywhere. They generally use US or European servers because it's cheaper and faster.
There's also a huge amount of SEOs in Russia and other CIS countries as it can mean significantly better money than in physical jobs there. Them and their communities just don't come up a lot as they speak with their native language, of course. Sometimes they lurk around in English forums, and I go lurk around in their forums because they have much more information about doorways and cloaking and other stuff that is generally ignored on western forums. And they also seem more willing to share, where in western SEO communities everyone just tries to sell sell sell![]()
