dante is a good proxy server but if the server set-up is not 100% accurate you may get in the situation where you will take down all your ram, especially when you are on full throttle.
Beside that you will also need to use iptables to get the desire results.
I used but now I have moved to 3Proxy witch is 10 time faster, more flexible in configuration... you can do almost anything with it. set users/ set user bandwidth limitation.. etc
None of above have build in monitoring beside the log files.

There is nothing that you can look up, just configure it and here you go. The adjustmen should be made according to your situation and machine. But as I said I drop dante and moved to 3Proxy

No is not.....
At this moment I'm not very sure if you are really using squid or you just heard of it... since someone that manage to set-up a squid proxy server I'm sure will know the difference between a socks proxy server and a http proxy server

I am new to proxies... so no I didn't know squid was different to SOCKS - learnt something new!
Im running it a 128mb VPS and have around 40mb free with HTTPD also running. CPU is one core of a E3-1320 and I have never seen a load of over 0.1 even with httpd and squid running.
It runs on a IPv4 in (for easy connectivity) and browses using a IPv6 where possible and failover to a IPv4 if required.
