I think they prefer people to get natural backlinking as in someone visits your site, likes the content, and then proceeds to put it on another site (or theirs)

but if you want to do it manually, than go for some web2.0 creation, videos, forum post through different IP's so it likes like other people did it.

I don't think it really matters, but I wouldn't be creating an outrageous number of backlinks everyday unless your site already has MANY unique visitors (and ones giving you backlinks)

Well if you are going per google, you shouldn't be building any backlinks.

Google doesn't have any exact rules regarding how many backlinks you can have for your site in a specific time frame.

Let's say for example you have a site that promotes vegetarian/vegan ethics with recipes and other things related to diet. Then a few vegan celebrities mention your site on twitter/facebook and all the sudden thousands and thousands of people are retweeting your link and posting it all over the internet causing thousands and thousands of backlinks to be produced... you aren't going to get penalized by google for this. On the contrary your site may sky rocket quickly due to the viral nature of your site. However, if you have a brand new site about teaching dogs to dance and you start manually building thousands and thousand of backlinks from very few IP's and with absolutely zero visitors then it may look sketchy.

Google doesn't actually want you building your own backlinks at all. Ol' Matt Cutts has made this clear in many videos that I've watched. If you are trying to rank a site and play by googles rules while you are doing it... you will be lucky if your site gets into the top of the serps within the next five years.

Try and make it look natural, don't throw 1000 links at a site and then do nothing for a few weeks. Slowly build it up, I usually add maybe 20/day for the first 2 weeks then slowly increase this.

He may have meant this starting off, but when your site is established I doubt that will be enough for competitive niches.

Backlink velocity is all about site variables, traffic, social hype, marketing, etc. You can't put a figure on it really. Yes, new sites with no traffic you're probably well advised to keep the link volume low - but say you launched a site with some hype and marketing behind it? You would get a lot more than 20 links a week naturally. Link velocity is also about keeping it steady and natural - i.e. not 20 on one day and then none for the rest of the week, try and drip it if you can.

The thing is that even an "unnatural" backlink velocity can be very natural indeed. A site that receives a steady 20 links a day would look rather unnatural to me even though the link velocity is consistent.

Get links from natural sources and don't worry about velocity.

Thats very true. One must also be selective in building links as low PR site links would not have so weight as compared to high PR ones.

Get links by attracting them, rather than by going out and manufacturing them. Even a new site can do that.

If a new site puts up an infographic or a video or something that goes viral, it can get a lot more than just 20 links in a day. There's no way Google would consider that to be unnatural or breaking some non-existent speed limit.

Link velocity is a rule-of-thumb developed by spammers to estimate how often to spam. The better idea is to not spam at all.

Well, there is no hard and fast rule. But better would be to backlink normally as a human would do and then try increasing it steadily.

Web 2.0 Websites. This is a very popular way to get back links by taking advantage of the existing authority of websites that Google loves. Web 2.0 sites such as Squidoo, Hubpages and Vox are effective but there are literally dozens and dozens of these websites. Same strategy applies with writing articles, but you can place your body text links anywhere you want linking back to your website for linking power.
Links from similar places as your competitors. Get links from the same place your competitors get them. An easy way to do this is to download a tool like SEO for Firefox. Use this tool when doing a search in Google. It will allow you to discover where all your competitors get many of their links. Go through the list and see if you can get some of the same ones they have.
My personal favorite way to get back links is getting articles placed on niche related blogs. This is one way I have found that is super effective. Write an article the same way you would for the article directories but now you can place that article on 30 related blogs of your choice. Each of your articles can have 2 back links so as you submit your articles you get up to 60 back links per submission. Very effective because Google loves blogs and having links on 30 different blogs that are related to your niche is a powerful way to increase your Google rankings.
Whatever way you decide to drive traffic to your site there is no doubt getting free traffic from the search engines is the best long term strategy. The sheer prestige of having your company ranking well in a search engine like Google will also help build your brand.
