* wondering why cryptos havent gone up as a result of this news... *

Robinhood Financial LLC, which makes a popular free stock-trading app, is getting into cryptocurrency. The move gives fellow financial-technology startup Coinbase Inc. a new competitor.

Digital currency trading marks the first paid product for Robinhood, which made a name for itself by letting anyone buy and sell small amounts of stock without fees. The company said it’ll only charge for cryptocurrency transactions to recoup the costs associated with trading the assets and won’t take a commission. Robinhood plans to roll out the option gradually and hopes to have it available to customers in most U.S. states by midyear.

The product should be popular among Robinhood’s young customer base. According to a recent survey, more than half of Bitcoin holders are from the ages of 18 to 34. Robinhood said its average customer is 30.

grown more rapidly, to more than 13 million as of late last year.

“Bitcoin has a resiliency to it,” said Baiju Bhatt, co-founder and chief executive officer of Robinhood. “This is something that we also feel like really fundamentally aligns with the mission of the company -- to make the financial system more accessible to the rest of us.”

However, Robinhood already missed a major boom. After rising more than 14-fold last year, Bitcoin has fallen about 20 percent since the beginning of the year. Stripe Inc., an online credit-card processor, said Tuesday that it would stop taking Bitcoin as a form of payment due to the high fees and long transaction times.

This new venture won’t be easy for Robinhood. Even the biggest exchanges are suffering from slow trading and other issues as demand has skyrocketed. Complaints about Coinbase, for instance, have surged recently. This week, Coinbase added a former Twitter Inc. executive to its ranks to lead customer service and vowed to substantially increase its support staff. Robinhood says it has also added to that department recently.

“There will be a wait list, and we will onboard customers at a rate at which we can support them,” Bhatt said. “We’re not strangers to trading operations. We’ve been doing this for years now in public markets, and we’ll take what we’ve learned from doing this and apply it to crypto.”

The slow rollout should help. Starting in February, all Robinhood customers will be able to have watch lists for Bitcoin and other crypto-assets like Ethereum and Ripple. Trading will come later. A Robinhood spokesman declined to say which exchange it will use, but he said the company will add multiple ones over time, with the goal of getting customers the best prices.

Before it's here, it's on the Bloomberg Terminal.

Time to pump again ? India going to release some bad news about it soon, bad for us.

I was just reading an article about this and I thought how this would impact Cobinhood.

Sell stocks to buy crypto. I’m in.

I'd love the opposite right now. I've been using Robinhood religiously for about two months now, and just started ramping up stock buys in the past week. With a portfolio of Amazon, Netflix, Starbucks, Apple, and Facebook I've seen January growth that exceeds my crypto portfolio. Heck, Netflix is up 20% in the past week. And it's a $100+ billion company with something backing it.

What's disappointing to me is that Robinhood is shifting already into less of a user-side application and more of a profit-hunting business. A few days back they removed phone support from their Help center. And now instead of accelerating rollout of their web app, working on stronger market information, candlestick charts, etc they are foraying into completely new territory.

If I have the opportunity to dump my Coinbase into Robinhood and instantly exchange it for stocks with zero transaction fee at some point though, that would be swell.

By the way, much like their million-member long waitlist for the web app, Robinhood has a waitlist for Crypto as well that hasn't been linked in this thread yet: https://crypto.robinhood.com/.

Already over 100,000 people in line.

EDIT: and Coinbase rebuts this with their own, powerful message:

ETH Sends Temporarily Offline
ETH sends are temporarily unavailable. Our team is investigating the issue. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

I agree their app lacks features and is only good for commission free trading. I’m fine if that’s all they want to do because there are so many other places to get information from before trading.

Once it goes live guarantee btc surges 25% in one day

This is an interesting event. I use robin hood and will look forward to this developm6

Looks like a good deal! I love how the devs integrated their trading system. Also the delay system seems to work well (haven't tried, just saw on a yt video).

How does Rubbinghood make money from this?

They'll make money with numbers and their monthly gold system where you can loan from them and have an easier way to integrate to their own bank account. Seems promising

Looks like it'll only be initially available in a few states.
http://fortune.com/2018/01/25/bitcoin-millennials-robinhood-cryptocurrency/
The service will initially be available in California, Massachusetts, Missouri, Montana, and New Hampshire, and will become available to other states in coming months. The list of cryptocurrencies largely corresponds with those with the biggest market cap, and also includes the likes of Monero and Dogecoin (full list below).

Trump + Central Banks printing money

Everyone prepare for 2008 all over again, IMO it's a bubble like few we've seen. Essentially central banks printed cash freely for the past 4+ years and pumped it into stock markets.

Also Trump and his situation. I'd be careful. Cash is safe harbor IMO.

Cash instead of gold?

also - if the stock market crashes, its quite possible that bitcoin and a few select cryptos will rise. or disappear. impossible to say but seems either could happen..

People generally pour their money into gold when the stock market goes down. I don’t think the stock market will go down until 2019/2020 when trump is near his end. I think you will see a slow down leading up to it, but right now Trump favors businesses so I would be surprised if things crash this year.

I don’t think crypto will rebound from a crash as well as stocks do. There are a lot of blue chip companies that have been around for decades and will continue to be around. If the stock market crashes I’m selling off all of my crypto and buying up bargain stocks. I don’t trust many of these coins because they appear to have a solution for a problem that doesn’t exist and I don’t plan to stick around holding my bag of overvalued crypto coins to see who survives the blood bath. I will buy back in after the dust has settled for pennies on the dollar.

Hopefully crypto won’t crash before the stock market. I can see myself transferring money into crypto during a stock market crash then back into stocks when things bottom out. If Robinhood allows me to do this with no transaction fees then sign me up.

My bet is there is a huge crash coming in the fiat markets due to all the money they printed.

This money will definitely go to Bitcoin IMO
