    Hi BHW,

I am building an amazon site using gazette theme.
As I would like to get traffic using SEO I am building one page 100% optimized for this keyword.

    1) Index page of gazette theme only shows excerpts of posts.... so not very helpful for ranking my keyword. Url of index page is www.mysite.com
    2) SEO Optimized page will have url like : www.mysite.com/main-keyword

My concern is : In terms of SEO, is it better to rank for a keyword placed on the index page (www.mysite.com) or is it ok to rank for an internal page like: www.mysite.com/main-keyword

What would you think is better ?

    Thanks

Ok, I will reformulate my question:

Will my rank be better using domain name: www.mysite.com than www.mysite.com/page1
or it thoes not matter for seo purposes ?

    Thanks

it does not matter. You need your place in SERP and it does not matter the main domain or the sub page. It is good to have page in SERP with maximum close relevance. That's it.

I think it will be best to try and rank the home page as home pages have tendency to rank easier than inner pages.

You rank your homepage for certain keywords, you rank your internal pages for other keywords. With an eCommerce site you absolutely rank the internal pages.

    Google "gift ideas"

you see that. Target, Amazon, etc etc... they are ranking that keyword on internal category pages because they are optimized for those keywords... its not the main domain that's ranking for that keyword.

If you're selling lots of things on your site, you don't just blast a shit load of links with loads of anchors at the homepage and hope to God you start ranking for those terms... you set up internal urls/pages optimize each for a specific category/product/keyword, with content reflecting that, and rank that. Which will in turn bring authority to your site for all those terms, as you start ranking them.

Its actually frequently easier to rank an internal url because you can optimize it completely for that particular keyword. Especially for sites that cover many topics/ sell many products.

So if your site/store is after a certain niche, you rank the homepage for the brand and general niche itself. "DIY Gardening Supplies" and internal pages for "super weed trimmer" . You don't rank the homepage for "super weed trimmer" unless the entire site is about "super weed trimmer". Though you can definitely send a few anchored links with "super weed trimmer" at the homepage to help that internal page.
