Hello my name is Andrea and I'm affected by major depression.

It's still strange to put a label on what it really is but, it's a process of my recovery.

I don't want to go into details but I can say I've been through an hard time. Hard enough to give me insomnia, suicidal thoughts, eating disorders and other fun stuff.

Since I can't afford a psychiatrist I have to be my own doctor. I tried to research online a little bit about depression and I found out that "rituals" are golden when you try to recover.

My ritual is very very simple but effective. I wake up early in the morning, have breakfast. I go for a 30 min run around the block. I get back, have a shower, have a blueberry yogurt. I read something to put my mind at ease, for a while. Then I study a little bit, then I get back to work until lunch. I smoke my pipe with a good cup of coffee, relax a little bit, then back to work again. That's it.

What's your ritual? What's your daily routine?

So, you're making each day same? Awesome, if you wanna get suicidal thoughts...

You're making a robot out of yourself. Allow yourself some freedom, man...

Your schedule is good and its a nice combination pipe + coffe but don't forget the hot chick + glass of wine every now and then.

Laugh with your friends. Go out and have some good time with your friends, that will really help you.

yeah go out and with your friends or to a bar and interact with people you will be recovered in no time.

get up and check my rank checker ....... then coffee if i am not too upset ;)

Rituals can be good for you and can give you more discipline. I think it takes about 3 weeks of repetition before your ritual becomes habit and you feel uncomfortable or uneasy if you break it.

My ritual was essentially the same as w9go's till there came a time I had too many to check on and came to the conclusion that checking your rankings everyday is not good for your health. It's much more effective to just keep working and checking them out every month.

i wake up and still have asleep i manage myself breakfast. Till i finish i'm almost awake and i get myself freshed up. Get to my computer do some work, write something, then time for lunch then back to my computer grabbing cups of tea often and sleeping late after watching some tv shows or movies. That's how i waste a day

Well i'm an early riser no matter how late i sleep. I have a shower followed by a breakfast . After i lazily wander around i do some work have coffee till lunch then i'm back to work again. Writing and making stuff. Soon comes the dinner and i tuck my laptop in my bed and continue working till i doze off.

I had a similar experience years back. Social interactions solved most of the symptoms I experience. Talking can help alleviate stress and other symptoms related to depression. If it's clinical depression then I suggest getting some meds just to help make the experience easier. If it's not then breaking your routine from time to time and doing something you enjoy could really help. Do something new. Find a hobby that excites you or you find enjoyable. Some people go on walks or jogging. This is probably due to the fact that endorphines (pleasure hormones) are released when exercising (and during sex :D). This is what some people describe as a "natural high". You could also get an extra dose of endorphines by eating peppers (cayenne in peppers stimulates the relese of endorphines), eating some carbs, getting a hot bath, sleeping. Hope this helps you out. Message me if any work for you. :-)

Hi HQWriting, Andrea

Thank you for starting this thread.

I too suffer from Depression and for the last 10 years it has fucked me up too.

I don't know where you are based but I would suggest you see a Doctor.
You might also find self help or support groups in you local area, I don't use these types of service but some people find them helpful.
Try to read up on Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). You might find it useful.

DO NOT SELF MEDICATE - Yes, you can buy the drugs online but unless you know what you are doing, you will end up doing yourself more harm than good.

The biggest problem with this Mental Illness is that other people don't understand it and they won't understand it unless it affects them.
(I wouldn't wish this on anybody).
It can also be a selfish illness as your thoughts and feelings tend to be focussed inwardly.

If you are in a relationship or have a family then talk to them about it if you can.
As you are a writer, I would suggest writing down how you feel or maybe even starting a personal blog and make writing in it a daily activity.
I know things are tough and you might be in a dark place right now but try to focus on at least one thing everyday.

If you really don't have anybody to discuss things with then feel free to Skype me.

Best of luck.

W130SN is right about getting a doctor's help and not self medicating. Depression is a complex illness and there are many factors involved in choosing medication. Getting proper prescribed medication can actually help you "function" in some ways that your finding hard to. Support groups can help. It doesn't mean you have to get into an AA type group. Just find people that you could hang out with regularly. This helped me out a lot. Sometimes being alone can breed depressing thoughts. Get out and mingle! :-)

This has to be the MOST brave and self-disclosure post I have EVER read on BHW.
Thank you for posting it.
Inspriring to see members post like that.
I sincerely hope that the OP and other members fully recovers
(who perhaps may not be so brave to post they too once suffered in silence,
either from depression or addiction issues from family and friends)

Given that many members here in BHW have a fairly inactive lifestyle (health activity and fitness wise)
and hence are perhaps more prone to such disability;
I wonder how many members have also recovered from such issues,
or indeed are perhaps suffering now at this time?

OP please remember that you have people who care in this IM marketing forum,
and although you are a new member,
we are here to help, if you so desire.

Talking about things can make the problems in our lives more manageable,
and as the above poster has stated, CBT is one sure way of helping....
I know this from personal experience with an issue I had several years ago,
and if it worked for me, theres a fair chance it will help you too.

Kindly PM me (in total confidence) once you have enough posts here to PM (I think it is 15 quality posts)
and I would love to chat with you about anything, anytime, any format you wish,
whether it is OCD or addiction issues, or whatever, I have a fair amount of experience at helping others offline,
and I am willing to help point you into a brighter and happier place, if you like, no pressure, just consider it.

OP please listen to this song in the meantime...... Good Luck

Good for you for exercising...that is a proven way to boost your emotional state...being around people helps as well, and doing some charity as well...if you're methodical (and it sounds like you are), why not set a goal of helping one person a day?
Also, I had a time in my life when I liked to write a bit at the end of the day...just reflections or whatever, and I made it a point, no matter how bad the day was, to write three things that I was thankful for...that's a good way to get into the right frame of mind, you might want to experiment to see if it works for you.
