They were owned by AOL, and I believe AOL is in the process of being sold out to Verizon. This site must have been losing money, so I'm guessing Verizon is cutting it.
On a side note, AOL is retarded for not figuring out a way of monetizing this earlier. They could have easily at least flipped it into a different model than a directory and made it profitable.

However they might RIP with couple of mil more instead of like this.Wasn't yahoo selling links in their paid directory at $250-300 a year at the same time while DMOZ was free and you needed to be editor to go in? At a time with pretty much same power if I recall well.

There seems to be a registrar issue as every registrar is now experiencing DMOZ in url purchases by the thousands.
Odds are they will all shut down temporarily due to bandwidth overload.

Do you think the "dmoz" trademark is alive, but the trademark registrars can't show it because of issues?
I just catched a very good "dmoz.***" domain, but I don't want to fight with AOL.

Like someone said near the beginning of this thread, you would only have to charge a few $ per site to make a shitload of cash.
Could just charge for a "verified business" badge or something, then invest half the money into promoting the site.
Maybe rebrand it to be a bit like trust pilot or something so that it's more of a value added directory.
As google is becoming more and more commercial (and thus less of a free and non-biased search engine) I think they will slowly become a gap in the market for something new (or a new spin on something old school like directories)...
