The simplest way to get started is to watch a video. :)

    or follow a text tutorial
    developer.mozilla.org/en/docs/Building_an_Extension
    developer.mozilla.org/en-US/Add-ons/Thunderbird/Building_a_Thunderbird_extension
    kb.mozillazine.org/Getting_started_with_extension_development

Afterwhich, you should dwell into the details of why each file is created.

Generally, for development of extension or add-on, you need to follow a certain set of guideline to develop your plugin so that the software can run it.
Some call it interface, platform or API, but what is mainly mean is that Thunderbird will only execute the instruction (logic) if you follow their define guideline.
The reason is that Thunderbird has no way to know what is the logic you going to develop and thus, need to specify a standard structure and use that to execute.
In return, what you get is well defined structure that if follow, will run in their platform.
